Public Technologies Launches Ride-Sharing Experiment in Komatsu, Japan
Public Technologies, a GovTech startup based in Tokyo, has partnered with the city of Komatsu in Ishikawa Prefecture to initiate a ride-sharing experiment in the southern region of the city. This initiative is part of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's project to address transportation gaps in underserved areas. The ride-sharing trial is set to commence on November 4, 2025, utilizing their proprietary "PubTech AI Dispatch" service aimed at creating a sustainable public transport network through collaboration among residents, transport providers, and local government.
Background and Challenges
The southern region of Komatsu, particularly around Awatsu Station, has experienced a drop in bus services, making public transport a challenge for local residents. While commercial facilities necessary for day-to-day life are concentrated in this area, the existing transportation options, including limited bus and train schedules, have resulted in a mobility crisis. Additionally, a shortage of drivers with the necessary licenses exacerbates the issue. Public Technologies has been actively engaged in addressing these challenges and enhancing local transportation since acquiring the management rights for Komatsu City’s ride-sharing operations in 2023.
The Ride-Sharing Initiative
In response to the identified transportation needs, the experiment will operate on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (excluding public holidays and the year-end/New Year holidays). The ride-sharing service will cater to both residents and visitors, thereby addressing the reduction of bus services and the lack of available drivers. Focusing on user-friendliness, the service design includes door-to-door service and options for telephonic booking and cash payments, making it accessible for a broad demographic, including the elderly.
The flexible and expandable system developed by the company will also incorporate various fare structures to meet regional demand. Plans for adjusting operational frameworks based on user feedback demonstrate an ongoing commitment to fostering a sustainable transit model in the community.
About PubTech AI Dispatch
