Ningbo to Host the Key SCO Energy Ministers Meeting in 2025

SCO Energy Ministers Meeting in Ningbo

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will convene its Energy Ministers Meeting in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province on June 26-27, 2025. This significant event, focusing on energy cooperation under the theme "Integrate Innovation for Energy Future," showcases China’s ambition to lead in global energy transformation. As part of the SCO summit, this meeting not only emphasizes collaboration among member states but also serves as a platform for various stakeholders in the energy sector, including regulators, international organizations, and academic institutions, to discuss pressing issues impacting the energy landscape.

Strategic Importance of Ningbo

Ningbo, a traditional industrial hub and a key port city in China, stands out due to its impressive cargo throughput exceeding 1.3 billion tons annually. The city has made remarkable strides in renewable energy practices, positioning itself as a model for sustainable energy systems and advanced industrial practices. The meeting is expected to officially introduce the "China-SCO Renewable Energy Cooperation Report 2024," outlining strategic frameworks and actionable insights for enhancing regional energy cooperation.

Promoting Green Practices

A major highlight of the SCO meeting is the various forums dedicated to technological, industrial, and policy innovations aimed at achieving sustainable energy development. Ningbo has been at the forefront of implementing green technologies, as demonstrated by the pioneering integrated energy project at the Chuanshan area of Ningbo Zhoushan Port. This project incorporates distributed wind power, solar energy systems, energy storage solutions, and microgrid technologies, significantly contributing to the city’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality.

Since implementing its first wind generator in January 2024, Ningbo has successfully produced over 40 million kWh of green electricity, greatly reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Such achievements underscore the city’s capability to produce reliable renewable energy, with just five days of operation from two large wind turbines meeting the monthly electricity needs of several port cranes.

In addition to large-scale energy projects, Ningbo is also transforming its automotive industry. Zeekr, an electric vehicle manufacturer at the Meishan site, utilizes robotic technology to streamline vehicle production, achieving substantial outputs with a new electric car being crafted every 110 seconds. This integration of advanced manufacturing techniques reflects the establishment of a robust ecosystem for new energy vehicles, valued at approximately 100 billion yuan.

Community Engagement and Economic Growth

The commitment to renewable energy extends to local communities, where initiatives like rooftop photovoltaic systems in Haishu district enhance household incomes. The 362 local homes generate around 600,000 kWh annually, representing an additional 500,000 yuan in income for residents. Such community-centered projects ensure that the transition to renewable energy benefits all levels of society, fostering inclusive growth and sustainable urban development.

Ningbo is also nurturing a high-tech industry environment, having incubated 46 technology-driven companies through the Ningbo Industrial Internet Institute. This initiative attracts skilled professionals and innovative ideas, fortifying the city’s position as an emerging leader in energy technology and sustainable practices.

A Broader Perspective on Global Cooperation

The SCO, which started with six founding members in 2001, has grown significantly into a comprehensive organization consisting of 10 member states, two observers, and numerous dialogue partners. Dubbed the world's most populous regional cooperation body, the SCO's ongoing initiative for sustainable development in 2025 emphasizes the importance of collaboration in addressing global energy challenges. The upcoming meeting at Ningbo exemplifies this ethos, aiming to create a framework for future energy collaboration that prioritizes innovation, resilience, and environmental sustainability. As countries gather to share knowledge, ideas, and solutions, the outcomes of this dialogue could shape the future trajectory of energy policies around the globe.
