Hasegawa’s Unique Summer Workshop for Children

Hasegawa Co., renowned for their sales of Buddhist altars and gravestones, hosted an engaging workshop titled "Summer Kids Workshop: Creating Unique Lanterns" at the top floor of Keikyu Department Store in Kamoioka, Tokyo on August 1st and 2nd, 2026. This event targeted children below elementary school age and not only allowed them to unleash their creativity but also educated them about an essential Japanese cultural tradition – Obon.

An Emphasis on Cultural Legacy

The primary aim of this workshop was to instill an appreciation for ancestors and to pass down the values associated with Obon to the younger generation. During the two-day event, a total of 27 families, comprising of 34 children, attended, making it a resounding success.

To kick things off, participants engaged in a mini-lecture using an original booklet titled "What is Obon?", which provided thorough insights into the significance of Obon and the cultural representations inherent in holiday decorations, including cucumbers (representing horses) and eggplants (symbolizing cows), and the history surrounding the use of Chinese lanterns.

Hands-On Experience

Following the informative session, kids got their chance to express their personalities through art by painting on plain white lanterns using colorful felt-tip pens. Many took their time deliberating on their designs, showcasing heartfelt efforts as they decorated their lanterns. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, especially when photo opportunities were presented at a designated photo booth after completing their custom creations.

Positive Feedback from Participating Families

According to feedback obtained through a follow-up survey, many families expressed how the event allowed them to clarify the origins and meanings of Obon, which can be challenging to explain at home. One parent shared, "The illustrated booklet made it easy for my child to understand the significance behind the cucumbers, eggplants, and lanterns. I look forward to visiting a flower shop with my child to experience the culture hands-on."

Another expressed gratitude for the workshop, noting that it provided a rare opportunity to teach their child about Obon, adding, "This chance to explain Obon was invaluable; I plan to incorporate our lantern into this year’s celebrations."
