Discover a World of Tropical Insects
From July 7 to August 30, 2026, the Itabashi Tropical Environment Plant Museum, affectionately known as 'Nettaikan', will host the much-anticipated special exhibition titled 'Tropical Insects 2026'. Located just a seven-minute walk from Takashimadaira Station, this facility emulates the lush, vibrant ecosystems of Southeast Asia's tropical rainforests and features a mini aquarium that is a delight for the entire family.
This summer event promises to be a favorite among children and families alike, offering
free admission for elementary and middle school students every weekend and special weekdays during the summer school break from July 22 to August 28.
Exhibiting Amazing Creatures
Visitors will have the chance to see some of the world's most impressive insect species up close. Featured in this year's exhibition are the giant `Hercules Beetle`, renowned as one of the largest beetles globally, along with the brilliant `Rainbow Stag Beetle` and the uniquely-horned `Caucasian Beetle`. These magnificent insects are not just educational; they're awe-inspiring and mesmerizing for young and old.
Moreover, you can engage with live insects in the newly-added
insect interaction corner, where brave patrons can get up-close with a
scorpion, the
goliath cockroach, and a
flower mantis. This fun and interactive area allows attendees to learn more about these fascinating creatures while also offering opportunities for memorable photographs.
In addition to these live interactions, a variety of
guided tours and talks will enhance your understanding of insects and their habitats. Every visitor will receive a
free 'Summer Homework Assistance Notebook', a tool designed to aid in researching and learning about the local flora and fauna found at the museum, making it a perfect resource for any summer assignment!

The exhibition operates daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with last admission at 5:30 PM, and is closed on Mondays (though it is open on August 10, a holiday Monday). The museum itself is a unique educational space, comprising several vegetation zones that simulate tropical ecosystems, from coastal to highland climates.
