On July 23, 2026, the Board of Trustees of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL) revealed a significant leadership transition after the library's historic grand opening on July 4. The founding CEO, Edward F. O'Keefe, has been appointed President and CEO of The WNET Group, which oversees New York's flagship PBS station among other media ventures. O'Keefe will continue to serve as CEO of TRPL through September 18, 2026, before assuming his new role.

Hilary Hamm, Chair of the Board of Trustees, expressed gratitude toward O'Keefe for his seven years of dedication in realizing the library’s vision. She emphasized the importance of this transition, stating that the library is entering a promising new phase, further complemented by the considerable success following its inauguration.

Since the library's opening, it has received an overwhelming response, with over 40,000 visitors and nearly 3,500 members signing up to engage with Theodore Roosevelt's legacy. The library has also attracted more than one million hits on its website, highlighting Roosevelt's lasting impact and the communal experience offered through the library.

Theodore Roosevelt V, the great-great-grandson of Theodore Roosevelt and part of the Board of Trustees, shared how the library is more than just a center for historical storytelling. Roosevelt emphasized its role in promoting leadership, citizenship, and conservation, and acknowledged O'Keefe's vision from its inception. He remarked on how O'Keefe cultivated a space that encourages individuals to reflect on their roles as engaged citizens, reflecting the essence of Roosevelt's mission.

O'Keefe reminisced about the early days of building the library, recalling the absence of land, architectural designs, and exhibits. He, alongside the local community, turned the dream of creating a monumental space commemorating Theodore Roosevelt into a reality. O'Keefe remarked, "Building this Library alongside the people of North Dakota has been the honor of my career. What we set out to do is now real, thriving, and welcoming thousands of participants."

As part of this leadership transition, the Board has initiated the formation of an Executive Search Committee dedicated to discovering the library's next leader. Meanwhile, the existing leadership team remains committed to ensuring seamless operations, continued programming, and the exceptional experiences that the library is celebrated for.
