International Jazz Vocals Competition 2026 Set for Paris with Highlight on Jazz Singing

The 2026 International Jazz Vocals Competition in Paris

The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz has made an exciting announcement regarding its International Jazz Vocals Competition 2026. For the first time in its history, this acclaimed competition will take place outside the United States, specifically in the vibrant city of Paris, in partnership with the Fondation Louis Vuitton. This year's competition will shine a spotlight on jazz vocals, emphasizing one of the most expressive forms of musical storytelling.

Having been a cornerstone event for nearly four decades, the International Jazz Competition is recognized as the leading platform for discovering and nurturing the next generation of jazz musicians. In 2026, the event will welcome exceptional young vocalists from all corners of the globe. Open to artists aged 30 and under, the competition boasts over $100,000 in scholarships and prizes. Among these are substantial awards, including $50,000 for the first prize, courtesy of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, along with $25,000 for the second place and $10,000 for the third.

The weekend of the competition is slated to feature a semifinal round on Saturday, October 10, followed by a grand finale and an all-star gala concert on Sunday, October 11, held in the grand auditorium of the Fondation. An esteemed panel of judges, led by renowned jazz vocalist and Institute of Jazz alumni Dee Dee Bridgewater, will evaluate the contestants alongside a remarkable group of globally recognized artists.

Past winners, such as Jazzmeia Horn, Jane Monheit, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Gretchen Parlato, and Veronica Swift, have emerged as prominent figures in the jazz scene, shaping the future landscape of this vibrant genre.

Herbie Hancock, the chairperson of the Institute, expressed his enthusiasm for the 2026 event, stating, “The competition will be centered on jazz vocals. The human voice is the first instrument. A singer can share a story that connects with the audience directly. Music allows us to convey emotions, ideas, and experiences that transcend words. A great vocalist brings together the worlds of language and music in a profoundly human way.”

The Institute's competition has previously launched the careers of numerous outstanding artists, creating a vital bridge between emerging talents and the future of jazz. Not only does it support vocalists, but it has also been instrumental in the early careers of prominent musicians like saxophonists Joshua Redman and Melissa Aldana, composer and Oscar-winning pianist Kris Bowers, bassist Ben Williams, and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire.

Proud to collaborate with the Fondation Louis Vuitton, a leading cultural institution dedicated to making art accessible, the event reflects a shared commitment to contemporary art and live performances. The Fondation, which showcases a dynamic range of exhibitions across various disciplines, maintains a strong dedication to classical and jazz music programming within its architecturally striking building designed by the late Frank Gehry, an honorary member of the Institute’s Board of Trustees and recipient of the Herbie Hancock Humanitarian Award.

As a landmark of modern architecture in Paris since its opening in 2014, the Fondation has drawn over 12 million visitors and stands as a beacon for international cultural programs.

The competition will be broadcast worldwide on Medici.tv, FLV Play (the Fondation's video platform), and YouTube, ensuring audiences across the globe can experience the excitement of performances and witness the emergence of the next generation of jazz talent. Additionally, the program will feature special workshops at the Fondation, providing local organizations and students with unique jazz education opportunities.
