Tata Communications Launches Initiative to Create AI Super Highway in India
Tata Communications Announces Major AI Infrastructure Initiative
Tata Communications, recognized as a prominent global player in communications technology, has unveiled plans for a significant investment aimed at constructing an AI super highway in India. This ambitious project will involve an estimated investment of USD 450 million and is expected to facilitate the development of around 10,000 kilometers of AI-ready connectivity infrastructure. The initiative is poised to transform the landscape of digital connectivity in India, linking key data centres and AI hubs across the nation.
The backbone of this new infrastructure will consist of a high-speed and low-latency network that will be integrated with Tata Communications' existing global network. This enhanced connectivity will enable businesses to adopt AI technologies more efficiently, providing the critical support for the demands of next-generation AI applications.
Growth of Data Centers in India
India's data center industry is on the verge of extensive growth, fueled by increasing cloud adoption and rising enterprise demand for resilient and high-capacity digital infrastructure. As more businesses leverage AI technologies, the need for robust connectivity becomes just as essential as computational power and energy resources.
Rupesh Chokshi, the Chief Product and Technology Officer at Tata Communications, emphasized the necessity of an optimized network for the AI economy, stating, "The AI economy needs more than compute. It needs a network built for speed, scale, and resilience." Chokshi further noted that Tata Communications has played a crucial role in shaping India's digital economy, and this new AI Network Fabric builds upon that legacy, ensuring that global customers have the ultra-low-latency and resilient connectivity needed to scale their AI solutions confidently.
Connecting AI Hubs to the Globe
The initiative aims not only to bolster India’s status as a global gateway for AI and cloud connectivity but also to address the surging demand from hyperscale providers, digital-native businesses, and emerging cloud platforms. By establishing this expansive and highly effective network, Tata Communications will facilitate the growth of global hyperscalers and multinational corporations operating in India.
The project’s initial phase will focus on critical corridors including Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai, which are essential for AI development and hyperscale growth in India. Subsequent phases will expand connectivity into other developing data center ecosystems along India's East Coast and Western regions, with locations such as Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar, and GIFT City also being linked strategically.
Moreover, Tata Communications plans to connect key AI corridors and data center clusters to international cable landing stations, thereby establishing seamless connectivity between India and significant global AI locations. This initiative positions India as a strategic player within the global digital infrastructure arena.
A Commitment to Future Connectivity
Simultaneously, Tata Communications will continue to enhance its existing enterprise and data center connectivity efforts, scaling the National Long Distance and metro networks. This dual approach will not only support current growth but also prepare for future demands associated with a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
In summary, Tata Communications is set to play a pivotal role in establishing a robust framework for AI development across India through its commitment to building an AI super highway. This venture promises to enable businesses to leverage the full potential of AI technologies while fueling the next wave of economic growth in the region.
