Children's Creative Expressions Shine at Sogetsu Ikebana Junior Class Exhibition
The upcoming Sogetsu Ikebana Junior Class Exhibition titled "Flowers are the Heart" is set to take place on July 26 and 27, 2025, at the Sogetsu Headquarters in Tokyo. This marks the first exhibition in six years, featuring young students from the Akane Junior Class, led by the school's fourth-generation head, Akane Tenshi. The exhibition aims to convey the joy of creation and rich diversity through the children's expressive floral arrangements.
Founded by Akane Tenshi, the Akane Junior Class nurtures children's sensitivity and independence through the art of Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) from ages 3 to 18. The students will personally select their materials and traditional vases, and through engaging with the beauty of flowers, they will express their unique perspectives.
The exhibition will showcase the vibrant and imaginative creations of these children, who often exhibit both boldness and delicate sensibilities in their floral designs. Their work resonates deeply with visitors, prompting a reflection on the essence of Ikebana. The exhibition serves not only as a platform for artists but also as a reminder of the emotional power that flowers hold in sparking creativity.
Additionally, on July 27, a special workshop called "Come Together! Ikebana Workshop" will be conducted. This event allows participants to immerse themselves in the world of Ikebana. Visitors will have the chance to experience the joy of arranging flowers personally, regardless of their prior exposure to the art form. The workshop encourages each participant to ponder what flowers they would select and how they might express their thoughts through those arrangements.

During the exhibition, Akane Tenshi will express her greetings:
"This marks the first exhibition for many of these young artists, but they will create their works just as they do in our regular classes. They choose their materials and vases, and while younger participants will receive support from adults, most will work independently from start to finish. Listen closely in the exhibition space, and you’ll likely hear the children’s voices of love for flowers echoing through their creations."
The Akane Junior Class, initiated in 1989, is dedicated to providing children with hands-on experiences that cultivate a love for nature and the joy of creation through arranging flowers. Over the years, the class has expanded to include 40 students from diverse backgrounds, who gather three times a month to explore their creativity in Ikebana.
Previously, the exhibition celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Akane Junior Class in 2019, showcasing their vibrant works and performance. Participants expressed a blend of nerves and enjoyment, emphasizing the importance of self-expression within Ikebana. Many noted the visible growth and evolution in their skills, prompting reflection on their individual journeys.
The Sogetsu Headquarters, completed in 1977, stands as a modern architectural marvel designed by Kenzo Tange. With a garden designed by renowned artist Isamu Noguchi, it serves as a vibrant hub for creative activities, far beyond just Ikebana.
For those interested in the workshop, slots are available, though registration is required. Each session promises to be an engaging experience, allowing participants to create their own arrangements while guided by mentors from the Akane Junior Class. Photographs of completed works will be taken and emailed as keepsakes.
