Shanghai Electric Launches Sino-Pakistan Academy of Excellence
On November 24, 2025, Shanghai Electric officially inaugurated the Sino-Pakistan Academy of Excellence for Engineers, marking a significant step forward in educational collaboration as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. This ambitious project aims to cultivate a new generation of engineers equipped with the skills and expertise needed to thrive in today's rapidly evolving industrial landscape.
The academy was launched through a hybrid event occurring concurrently in multiple locations across China and Pakistan. This initiative is a collaborative effort between Shanghai Electric and Shanghai Dianji University, focusing on interdisciplinary education in energy and electrical engineering. The initiative is positioned as a key platform for fostering technological and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
During the launch, Zhu Zhaokai, President of Shanghai Electric Group, highlighted the pressing demand for talented individuals who possess a blend of theoretical knowledge, engineering experience, and the ability to build international relationships. He emphasized the importance of the academy in bridging academia with industry, thereby creating a robust international talent development system. “Our goal is to develop versatile engineers who can integrate various fields of knowledge and effectively engage in cross-cultural collaborations,” Zhu stated.
Gong Siyi, the Rector of Shanghai Dianji University, echoed these sentiments, expressing confidence that the academy would play a pivotal role in fostering friendship and technological cooperation between China and Pakistan. She affirmed that the academy would leverage high-quality faculty and educational resources to maintain a high standard of talent development and support services.
As the first international engineering education program established within the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the academy plans to offer customized master's degree programs tailored specifically to the Thar project, focusing on energy and electrical engineering. This curriculum will emphasize hands-on training, facilitated by a dual mentorship model involving professors and industry experts, equipping students to tackle real-world challenges through a practical-theoretical approach.
Shanghai Electric has prioritized systematic talent development and strategic planning to set up the academy, promoting constructive collaborations between industry stakeholders and academic institutions. This will contribute to an innovation ecosystem tailored for global integration and advanced technological convergence.
Since its establishment in 2024, the Academy has focused on enhancing the capacity of technological experts and the training of high-level specialists. Playing a critical role in the professional ecosystem, the academy aims to build a strong foundation for future leaders in technology.
One of the academy's flagship initiatives, the Tech Expert Symposium, serves as a prestigious platform for experts and scholars to share knowledge, foster technical cooperation, and enhance talent development. The symposium has successfully hosted five sessions dedicated to exploring the latest technological trends and practical engineering analyses.
In alignment with its proactive strategy towards talent, Shanghai Electric has committed to significant investments in technological development and human capital during this transformative period. In the first half of 2025, the company invested 2.546 billion CNY in research and development, reflecting a 9.4% year-on-year increase and accounting for 4.7% of its total revenue.
Recognizing that talent is its most vital strategic resource, Shanghai Electric intends to maintain this focus by reforming its development system to build a proficient and well-organized team.
