Mitchell Hamline School of Law Shines in National Patent Drafting Competition
Mitchell Hamline School of Law has made an impressive mark in the legal education landscape by advancing to the finals of the prestigious National Patent Application Drafting Competition. This success comes as a result of the school’s strong focus on intellectual property (IP) law and the remarkable talent of its students and alumni. In March, more than 45 teams from law schools across the United States competed in the regional rounds, but only five—including the students from Mitchell Hamline—will move on to compete at the national level alongside notable institutions such as Harvard Law School and the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.
The National Patent Application Drafting Competition is a unique event organized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). It challenges participants to draft a full patent application based on a hypothetical invention, followed by an oral defense of their application to a panel of experts in patent law. This year's national round is set to take place on April 17 at the USPTO headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia.
The Mitchell Hamline team consists of standout students: Haley Beann, Scott Dombroski, Sam Fandel, and Justin Johnson. They are guided by two experienced patent attorneys and alumni—Peter Heinonen and Eric Phillips—who are both committed to nurturing the next generation of legal professionals. "Working with the students throughout the semester has been incredible. I've seen their comprehension of patent law flourish, and their teamwork has truly boosted their confidence as they prepare for the finals,” Phillips stated.
Mitchell Hamline's commitment to IP law is mirrored in its comprehensive curriculum. The school offers over 30 credits concentrating on patent law, providing students with an extensive understanding of this complex field. Participants gain not only theoretical knowledge but also practical experience through various opportunities, such as contributing to Cybaris®, An Intellectual Property Law Review, and participating in specialized clinics focusing on patents and trademarks through the Student Intellectual Property Law Association (SIPLA).
Holding the distinction of being the largest law school in the region and one of the largest in the United States, Mitchell Hamline School of Law serves over 1,000 students with more than 50 full-time faculty members. The school’s flexible approach to education allows students to engage in full-time, part-time, on-campus, or blended learning, catering to a diverse population of law students.
The achievements highlighted by the National Patent Application Drafting Competition exemplify Mitchell Hamline's reputation for excellence in legal education. It reflects the school's ongoing efforts to adapt to changing legal landscapes and the growing importance of intellectual property in today's economy. As the upcoming finals present a platform for showcasing these advancements, the entire Mitchell Hamline community is undoubtedly looking forward to further achievements and accolades in the realm of intellectual property law.
