What is Freesball?

Freesball, a beach sport that originated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was invented in 1945 on Copacabana Beach. Since then, it has gained popularity around the globe. Its main characteristic is that instead of competing against each other, two players work collaboratively to maintain a rally, making it a scoring competition. Matches last for 5 minutes, with players keeping a distance of 7 meters apart. This cooperative nature has led to it being dubbed a "sport of empathy."

The JFBA has recently made significant strides in promoting the sport internationally. Collaborating with the Rio Freesball Federation (FEFERJ), they have agreed to establish the world's first international organization, UAFI, by October 2025. Emphasizing the enjoyment of freesball year-round as part of a travel culture, they aim to enhance sports tourism's compatibility with this unique sport. Currently, the JFBA has registered 29 regional clubs and six student organizations across Japan, actively promoting the growth of freesball culture.
