Almaty Hosts World Tennis General Assembly

From October 10 to 13, 2026, Almaty, Kazakhstan, became the focal point of the international tennis community as it proudly hosted the annual World Tennis General Assembly. This is a historic milestone as it marks the first time this significant event took place in Central Asia. The assembly gathered a diverse group of tennis leaders, representatives from national federations, international tennis organizations, and industry experts, all dedicated to shaping the future of tennis.

The event kicked off with a warm welcome from Kazakhstan's President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Although he could not attend, his remarks were delivered by the Mayor of Almaty, Darkhan Satybaldy, who officially opened the assembly, setting a collaborative tone for the meetings to follow.

During the assembly, the World Tennis Board of Directors held meetings on October 10 and 11. Delegates representing 137 countries engaged in fruitful discussions and deliberations from October 11 to 13, participating in panel sessions and voting processes to address pressing needs and future direction for the sport.

Among the notable moments was the honorary recognition awarded to World Tennis President David Haggerty, who received Kazakhstan's Order of Dostyk, Second Degree, presented by Yerbol Myrzabossynov, Minister of Tourism and Sports. This distinguished accolade acknowledged Haggerty's unwavering commitment to developing tennis and fostering international cooperation through the sport.

Kazakhstan's selection as the host for this assembly reflects the growing reputation and capabilities of the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation, led by Bulat Utemuratov, who also serves as Vice President of World Tennis. The assembly offered a valuable platform for Almaty to exhibit its advanced sports infrastructure and rich tennis traditions, enabling representatives from 137 nations to witness firsthand the city's sports dedication.

Utemuratov shone in the spotlight during the assembly. He was presented with the Award for Services to the Game by David Haggerty, honoring his significant contributions to the development and promotion of tennis over the years. Utemuratov's efforts focus on constructing modern sports facilities, nurturing young talent, and establishing Kazakhstan’s position within the global tennis arena.

This accolade coincided with the recognition of Kazakhstan's coach education system at the Gold level, which highlights the effectiveness of the nation's coaching programs and their impact on developing future tennis stars.

Central to the assembly's agenda was the World Tennis General Assembly meeting held on October 13, which discussed various facets of tennis development worldwide. Important topics included enhancing accessibility to the sport, developing youth tennis programs, improving sports facilities, training coaches, and organizing international competitions.

The assembly emphasized the vital role of national federations and the importance of fortifying international collaboration.
