Increase in Cat-Related Vehicle Incidents
As the warmer months approach, the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), led by President Masayoshi Sakaguchi, is sounding an alarm about a noticeable increase in troubles related to cats getting trapped in vehicles. This uptick coincides with the seasonality of kitten births, particularly in June when active kittens roam, leading to a remarkable surge in rescue calls.
A Statistical Surge in June 2025
In June of last year alone, a staggering
402 incidents were reported nationwide where drivers requested aid due to cats finding their way into engine compartments. This figure marks the highest number recorded over the past three years for this month, starkly highlighting the rising trend. For comparison, a subsequent survey conducted in November reported only
83 incidents, underscoring that June's figures are approximately
4.8 times greater than those recorded in November.
Traditionally, winter is thought to be a more prevalent time for these kinds of issues, yet it seems the playful spirit of spring-born kittens also presents an alarming risk in early summer. As kittens grow and gain confidence, they become injudicious explorers, and this often leads them to seek shelter in unexpected places, such as the warm confines of a car engine.
