Workday Unveils Military Skills Mapper to Enhance Veteran Hiring Practices

In an innovative move aimed at enhancing veteran hiring practices, Workday, Inc. has unveiled its latest feature called the Military Skills Mapper. This tool is integrated within the Workday Recruiting platform, designed specifically to assist organizations in better recognizing and hiring military veterans. The challenge many hiring teams face is the translation of military experience into civilian job terms; this is where the Military Skills Mapper comes into play.

Every year, over 200,000 service members transition into civilian life, bringing with them invaluable skills honed in high-pressure environments. However, the terminology used in military settings often does not correspond neatly with civilian job descriptions, making it difficult for organizations to see the full extent of what these veterans have to offer. With the Military Skills Mapper, employers will be provided with insights on how military experiences correlate with modern business needs, fostering a more informed recruitment process.

"Veterans are not seeking special treatment; they simply want their skills to be appreciated and understood," stated Rod Levy, CEO of Code Platoon, a nonprofit organization dedicated to coding education for the military community. According to Levy, the new tool could greatly enhance the clarity of veteran qualifications, which would help organizations meet their commitment to hiring veterans while recognizing the leadership, technical skills, and work ethics these individuals possess.

The Military Skills Mapper tool will be accessible within the 'My Experience' section of a candidate's Workday Recruiting profile. Upon activation, the tool analyzes the veteran's military background alongside the specific job description, producing a customized list of comparable civilian skills. This list is aimed at helping veterans articulate their experiences in a language that resonates with civilian recruiters. The feature also allows veterans to edit and refine the generated content, ensuring accuracy and relevance to their unique experiences.

"Veterans inherently possess skills such as leadership and teamwork that may not be immediately apparent in traditional job application processes," emphasized Joe Wilson, Workday's global chief technology officer, who also holds a position as colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He remarked that the Military Skills Mapper will enable organizations to recognize these capabilities, thus supporting better hiring decisions for positions that require such expertise.

By integrating this feature directly into Workday Recruiting, hiring teams can obtain a faster, more precise understanding of veteran skills without relying on external translation resources. This not only empowers employers but also instills confidence in veterans as they navigate the application process. The new feature will streamline the hiring process for veterans and alleviate some of the barriers they face when entering the civilian workforce.

Scheduled to become available for Workday Recruiting customers in the fall of 2026, the Military Skills Mapper represents a significant step towards smarter, more proactive hiring practices that aim to tap into the underutilized talent pool that veterans represent. Organizations committed to diversifying their workforce through veteran hiring will find this tool to be an invaluable resource for aligning military skills with organizational needs.
