New Learning Opportunities at NIJIN Academy Jiyugaoka School
In July, the NIJIN Academy Jiyugaoka School is set to open new doors for children in need of alternative education. As part of a rising trend, the number of students who are unable to attend traditional schools has reached a staggering 346,482. The NIJIN Academy, established in September 2023, has already catered to over 480 students across Japan through an online approach that serves grades 1 through 9. Parents have reported tremendous satisfaction, highlighting the power of a ‘two-way learning’ environment enhanced by a metaverse experience that fosters connections among learners nationwide.
With a reported school satisfaction rate of 91.4% and a class satisfaction rate of 96%, this innovative program has achieved an attendance recognition rate of 98% and supported over 100 students in returning to regular schooling through close collaboration with educational authorities. As we look forward to expanding our reach, the school is excited to announce the opening of additional campuses, bringing the total to 25 by the end of 2024.
Located in Setagaya, Tokyo, the Jiyugaoka School is distinguished by its unique approach to education. We are thrilled to invite potential students to experience a day at our school through our special one-day event on June 30. Guided by Ms. Ayu Sonoki, the head instructor of the Jiyugaoka School, children will not only learn cooking simple meals but also acquire essential life skills through collaboration and creativity.
Building Essential Skills through Cooking
Ms. Sonoki operates a cooking class for children aged 2 to 12. Throughout her interactions, she has observed many kids plagued by self-doubt and hesitance in trying new things. Her vision for the academy is clear: to foster a nurturing atmosphere where every child can explore their interests and develop a healthy sense of self-worth. This ambition stems from the belief that immersing oneself in a passion and pursuing it fervently will ultimately lead to heightened self-esteem and a brighter future.
A Journey towards Confidence
Cooking is not merely a skill; it serves as an empowering medium for children to unlock their full potential. Each dish they create allows them to experience joy, particularly when others resonate with their culinary efforts. The delightful sensation of sharing a meal underscores their achievements, laying the groundwork for their confidence. These formative experiences are crucial stepping stones toward building self-assurance and resilience.
In the Jiyugaoka School, an integral part of the curriculum consists of time allocated for students to self-prepare their lunch. This initiative encourages children to adopt responsibility and develop vital life skills in an encouraging environment. Here are some core principles upheld by the academy:
1.
Fostering Life Skills through Cooking: When children plan and execute their lunch preparations, they not only gain cooking abilities but also learn important life skills such as organization, teamwork, and gratitude towards food.
2.
Enhancing Communication: While cooking together, students naturally engage in conversations, boosting their communication skills and ability to collaborate. Even those who struggle with social interaction find solace and friendship in shared tasks, cultivating new relationships along the way.
3.
Engaging All Senses: The hands-on experience involved in cooking encourages children to activate all five senses. By engaging with ingredients—touching, smelling, and tasting—they stimulate their curiosity and pave the way for deeper learning beyond conventional classroom experiences.
