NICU Babies Go Wild About Reading at Memorial Hospital Miramar
In a delightful celebration at Memorial Hospital Miramar, the NICU babies fully immersed themselves in the magical world of books during the annual 'Babies with Books Read-A-Thon.' The event, themed 'Wild About Reading,' marked a joyous gathering for families, caregivers, and the tiniest patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. This gathering emphasized the importance of reading in a child's early life, particularly during stressful moments when families are navigating the challenges of the NICU.
For the seventh year in a row, the NICU has engaged in this charming initiative that promotes early literacy. Each participating baby was dressed in adorable jungle-themed costumes, showcasing a lion, zebra, monkey, and twin giraffes, creating an atmosphere filled with joy and creativity. Parents and siblings joined in this celebration by reading aloud at their loved ones' bedsides, fostering the significance of storytelling as a bonding experience.
Katherine Zaensi, a parent whose daughter donned a zebra outfit, expressed the emotional impact of the day. "Just having a baby in the NICU is hard. When you come in here and see her dressed up like that, it brings a light," Zaensi shared. Such moments are crucial as they not only celebrate the bond between parents and their babies but also provide a brief escapade from the otherwise stressful hospital environment.
Elaine Green, a nurse practitioner at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, reiterated the importance of reading to newborns. She noted, "The Read-A-Thon helps parents understand how vital it is to read to their babies, even at such early stages. Spending just 20 minutes a day reading can have a profound impact on development. It also allows parents to take an active role in their baby's care, which is incredibly empowering."
Since its inception in 2020, the Read-A-Thon has seen remarkable growth. Starting with 39 NICUs, the initiative has expanded rapidly, now incorporating nearly 250 facilities, all dedicated to enhancing early literacy among the youngest patients. In the previous year alone, participating NICUs collectively recorded an impressive 73,817 reading sessions during the 11-day event, with Memorial Hospital Miramar ranking 23rd among them. This solidarity among hospitals aims to fortify family bonding through reading, significantly contributing to the early development of language and cognitive skills in newborns.
From September 14 to 24, 2026, as part of National Literacy Month, this year's Read-A-Thon continues to foster a spirit of community and learning. Green highlighted that such initiatives invigorate families, empowering them to participate actively in their child’s nurturing even beyond the walls of the NICU. Reading becomes a family tradition that lasts long after their hospital stay, reinforcing the developmental benefits of early involvement in a child's life.
The 'Babies with Books Read-A-Thon' serves not only as a competition among NICUs but also as a serious campaign to raise awareness about the advantages of early reading. As participation grows, the initiative not only enhances literacy rates but also cultivates a community that values the upbringing of its youngest and most vulnerable members.
