DeTect to Roll Out Innovative Bird Detection Radar at Hanseo University
DeTect to Deliver the MERLIN True3D Bird Detection Radar
DeTect, Inc. is taking a significant step forward in aviation safety by sending their state-of-the-art MERLIN True3D bird detection radar (BDR) to the Flight Education Center at Hanseo University in South Korea. Scheduled for installation in mid-February, this advanced system is designed to bolster the safety protocols in pilot training and research.
The MERLIN True3D system is recognized as one of the most widely used radars in managing collision risks between aircraft and birds at commercial airports and military aerodromes. With this technology, air traffic controllers will receive real-time alerts concerning bird and drone movements in the vicinity of the airport. Enabling proactive measures, this radar can detect objects up to 11 kilometers away, providing critical information continuously, 24/7.
Gary Andrews, the CEO of DeTect, expressed enthusiasm about the implementation: "The system will enhance operational safety by offering real-time data concerning aircraft, bird, and drone activities. This allows us to maintain a safer flying environment, especially in pilot training scenarios, where awareness of potential risks is crucial."
Previously, in June 2024, DeTect and Hanseo University formalized their collaboration through an agreement aimed at integrating the MERLIN radar system into the airport runway in Taean. This partnership highlights a shared commitment to improving aviation safety through innovative technology solutions.
The radar system's installation will occur adjacent to the runway, ensuring optimal data collection and dissemination. It will be connected to the air traffic control tower and other relevant locations to ensure that those in charge of managing the airspace can respond swiftly to potential hazards. In this regard, the MERLIN radar serves not just as a detection tool but as an essential component of a comprehensive air safety strategy.
As part of its portfolio, DeTect has delivered over 1,100 radar systems worldwide since its inception in 2003. The company's robust product lineup also includes the HARRIER™ security and surveillance radars, DroneWatcher™ anti-UAS systems, bird protection systems for wind farms, and HARRIER aircraft lighting detection systems. Their extensive experience and innovations position them at the forefront of aviation safety technology.
In addition to South Korea, DeTect's products have made an impact across various regions, including the US, Canada, UK, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The company maintains integrated research, engineering, and manufacturing facilities in Florida, Canada, and Poland, along with offices in North Dakota, California, Hawaii, London, and other locations.
In summary, the deployment of the MERLIN True3D radar at Hanseo University marks a pivotal moment in the realm of pilot education and air safety management. As aviation continues to evolve, tools like these will play an indispensable role in safeguarding the future of flight.
