World Bicycle Relief Launches 6th Annual Pedal to Empower Campaign
On May 5, 2025, World Bicycle Relief proudly reintroduced its momentum-making initiative, the
Pedal to Empower campaign, marking its sixth year in action. This event invites individuals, families, and organizations worldwide to join a collective effort aimed at raising funds and increasing awareness for women and girls who confront mobility challenges daily in rural areas. The initiative is significantly supported by
Giant Group, a prominent player in the cycling industry, committed to enhancing access to mobility and opportunities.
In celebration of World Bicycle Relief’s
20th anniversary, this year’s campaign encourages participants to ride
20 kilometers, symbolizing two decades of meaningful impact. For countless individuals in rural landscapes, distance remains a pressing barrier to essential services, including education and healthcare. Without reliable transportation, many girls drop out of school and women struggle to receive necessary medical care. Conversely, by equipping these communities with bicycles, World Bicycle Relief facilitates transformative changes. The data reveals that with easier access to transport, girls are
19% less likely to drop out of school, healthcare workers can access
63% more houses, and local entrepreneurs can witness income increases of
53%.
CEO Dave Neiswander articulated the ongoing plight of mobility poverty, stating,
“When the nearest school or health clinic is miles away and the only option is to walk, the consequences are severe—missed opportunities and unsafe journeys, thus delaying dreams.” The
Pedal to Empower campaign aims to bring about significant shifts in these dire circumstances, emphasizing that improved access to transportation can change lives.
About Pedal to Empower
Pedal to Empower stands as the world's largest synchronized cycling event specifically dedicated to champions overcoming mobility hurdles. Participants can register to ride any time in May or June, whether solo, in groups, or even from the comfort of a spin studio or backyard. Each pedal stroke not only contributes toward a collective goal of raising
$1 million but directly helps fund comprehensive programs by World Bicycle Relief. These initiatives include providing
Buffalo Bicycles, training local mechanics, and enhancing community resources necessary for lasting impacts.
Phoebe Liu, CEO of Giant Group, joined in enthusiastic support, stating,
“We are proud to partner with World Bicycle Relief to power this year's Pedal to Empower campaign. We believe in the power of bicycles to change lives and are honored to collaborate with WBR and thousands of worldwide riders.” Furthermore, contributions made from May 31 to June 3 will be matched by a group of generous supporters, contributing to amplifying the effects of every donation.
In 2024, the Pedal to Empower campaign garnered the participation of over
54,700 riders across
138 countries, collectively raising
$1.3 million to extend mobility assistance to
more than 5,200 women and girls. This year, World Bicycle Relief aims to rally the global community under the shared belief that mobility is a fundamental human right.
