A Japanese Student Team Competes in AFECA Asia MICE Youth Challenge 2025
In a remarkable achievement, a student team from Technos College represented Japan at the
AFECA Asia MICE Youth Challenge 2025, marking the nation's sole participation in this prestigious international competition. Hosted by the Asia Federation of Exhibition and Convention Associations (AFECA), the event took place from November 5-7 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and gathered 21 teams of aspiring young creators from various Asian countries.
Technos College, located in Tokyo, is a diverse vocational institution that offers a wide array of courses across 30 disciplines, including entertainment and creative fields. The purpose of the AFECA challenge is to encourage students to unleash their creativity and propose innovative ideas that could potentially transform the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry.
The Technos College student team, consisting of three talented individuals, focused their project on conceptualizing an event aligned with MICE themes, particularly emphasizing Japan's vibrant subculture. During their presentation, they proposed an engaging campaign centered around the popular concept of ‘oshi-katsu’—enthusiastically supporting favorite characters and franchises.
In doing so, the students aimed not only to promote Japan's unique culture and the spirit of hospitality but also to address critical issues such as the environmental impacts associated with excessive production and waste generation linked to temporary events. Their innovative angle included strategies adhering to the traditional Japanese principle of ‘mottainai,’ which expresses a sense of regret over waste.
Though they did not clinch an award, the experience was incredibly enriching. The students had the opportunity to interface with industry leaders and engage with peers from other countries, witnessing their creativity and commitment firsthand. This exposure served as a tremendous source of inspiration for the Technos team.
The participating members included:
- - NG PUILING (1st Year, Concert and Event Science Department)
- - YAMAMOTO TAKUMA (4th Year, Video and Media Department)
- - WAKIYAMA RANA (4th Year, Acoustic Arts Department)
Insights from the Students
NG PUILING expressed her honor in participating in such a significant international competition featuring students from across Asia. She noted the value of collaborating with peers from different years and departments, allowing for a diverse and multifaceted approach to their project.
She remarked, “We focused on not just the Japanese perspective but also included insights from international viewpoints to effectively convey the strength of contemporary Japanese entertainment and culture.” Her emphasis on sustainability and the need to tackle environmental impacts through creative ideation was a vital aspect of their project.
Witnessing other teams’ meticulous presentations, from props to costumes, left her feeling stimulated and eager to apply this experience to future endeavors.
