National Press Club's New Press Freedom Center to Support Journalists in Need

National Press Club to Launch New Press Freedom Center

On November 25, an important milestone for journalism will take place when the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., officially launches its Press Freedom Center. This initiative marks a significant commitment to advocating for press freedoms and supporting journalists facing perilous circumstances globally.

Background and Mission

In recent years, the landscape for journalists has become increasingly treacherous. With growing instances of state-sponsored hostage situations and oppressive governance, there is a pressing need for organizations dedicated to protecting the rights and safety of journalists. The Press Freedom Center aims to fulfill this crucial role, focusing on three main areas: advocating for the release of detained journalists, providing assistance to exiled journalists who are resettling in the U.S., and supporting domestic journalists and media organizations in navigating emerging challenges.

Bill McCarren, who has devoted over ten years to championing the cause of endangered journalists, will head the Center. His notable efforts include playing a pivotal role in the release of Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian from imprisonment in Iran. Rezaian, a dynamic figure in the fight for press freedom himself, is set to join the Center as the Chair of the Advisory Board and currently serves as the Director of Press Freedom Initiatives at The Washington Post.

The Launch Event

The launch event, scheduled for 6 PM, will feature a panel discussion with McCarren and Rezaian, who will discuss the future of the Press Freedom Center alongside the myriad challenges that journalists face today. This event is open to the working press, and registration is required to attend.

A Commitment to Journalists in Distress

The National Press Club has a rich history of activism, working tirelessly for the release of American journalists detained abroad, such as Evan Gershkovich and Austin Tice. The organization has pursued justice through collaboration with families, news outlets, and government authorities, bringing these dire situations to the forefront.

Furthermore, the Club has supported journalists fleeing life-threatening circumstances in their home countries, such as Emiliano Gutierrez Soto. Since 2017, the Club has dedicated itself to advocating for Gutierrez’ asylum in the U.S., coupled with continued assistance.

Financial Commitment

The establishment of the Press Freedom Center reflects an unprecedented financial commitment from the National Press Club, with a notable $500,000 donation from the organization itself. This marks the largest donation in the Club's 117-year history. The National Press Club Journalism Institute will act as the fiscal sponsor for the Center, contributing an additional $100,000 to support its vital operations.

As the Press Freedom Center gears up for its launch, it stands ready to become a cornerstone in the fight for journalistic integrity and freedom. By creating a dedicated space for resources, advocacy, and community for journalists in distress, the Center aims to create lasting impacts for press freedom both in the United States and internationally.
