Public Voting Kicks Off for LA2050 Grants Challenge 2025 to Empower Communities

LA2050 Grants Challenge: A Call to Action for Los Angeles

Today marks the start of the annual LA2050 Grants Challenge, a unique initiative aimed at promoting community engagement and philanthropy in Los Angeles. Launched by the Goldhirsh Foundation, this project is now in its twelfth edition and continues to evolve, adapting to the needs and desires of local residents. From March 12 to April 18, Angelenos can vote online at LA2050.org/vote to prioritize the issues that matter most to them.

A Community-Centered Approach

This year, the theme of the Grants Challenge is “LA Together.” This theme reflects a collective spirit and resilience among Los Angeles communities, especially in the wake of recent natural disasters. Tara Roth, president of the Goldhirsh Foundation, emphasizes that “togetherness” is essential for fostering support and care among neighborhoods in times of need.

In 2025, the LA2050 Grants Challenge aims to distribute $3 million to impactful organizations throughout Los Angeles County. Of this, $1 million comes directly from the Goldhirsh Foundation, with additional funds provided by a coalition of philanthropic partners, including the Annenberg Foundation, Snap Foundation, and the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation.

How It Works

Voting is straightforward and open to all ages, allowing participants to express their priorities rapidly—taking as little as two minutes to complete. Voters will answer five questions that help shape the funding distribution based on community needs. After the voting period, from April 28 to June 6, nonprofit organizations, social enterprises, and government agencies can apply for grants to address the ten most-voted issues.

Once applications are received, they undergo a careful evaluation process. In late September, winning organizations will be announced during the LA2050 Grantee Showcase, where they will receive up to $75,000 in grant funding, alongside crucial support in social capital and skills development.

Coalition for Change

The LA2050 Grants Challenge thrives on collaboration, involving numerous outreach partners and dedicated youth ambassadors committed to enhancing community participation. This year, over 60 Outreach Partners, including nonprofits and local leaders, will encourage residents to make their voices heard. Moreover, a record-breaking 323 LA2050 Youth Ambassadors are trained to engage and mobilize communities across the diverse landscapes of Los Angeles.

Leaders from the partner foundations affirm their commitment to this joint mission. Cinny Kennard, executive director of the Annenberg Foundation, articulates the coalition's collective vision, recognizing LA2050 as a pivotal platform for fostering social capital and supporting daily efforts from various organizations. Joel Arquillos, executive director of the Snap Foundation, shares a similar sentiment, highlighting a belief in the impact of invested resources to empower the community, especially the youth.

The Challenge's Legacy

Since its inception, the LA2050 Grants Challenge has awarded a remarkable $27 million to help advance social impact initiatives in Los Angeles. This includes $11 million directed to 155 local organizations, showcasing how grassroots efforts can foster sustainable change. Notably, in 2024, housing and homelessness emerged as the top-voted issue once again, sparking discussions around community support and infrastructure.

Despite the challenges posed by recent fires and other crises, disaster preparedness remains a vital yet overlooked issue, reflecting the need for continued awareness and advocacy. As Los Angeles navigates its future, how will Angelenos prioritize their communities’ well-being?
