Nippon Chikudenchi Launches New Energy Storage Facility in Tottori City

New Energy Storage Facility in Tottori City

Nippon Chikudenchi Co., Ltd., based in Tokyo, has officially begun operations of its latest energy storage facility, the NC Tottori City Kedaka Town Storage Plant, designed for participation in demand-supply adjustment markets. This facility commenced operations on May 13, 2026, and marks a significant advancement in Japan's renewable energy management efforts.

The NC Tottori City Kedaka Town Storage Plant has a rated output of 1,988kW and a storage capacity of 8,146kWh. This facility uses battery systems produced by CATL, one of the leading battery manufacturers. The primary goal of this facility is to absorb and smooth out the power output fluctuations created by renewable energy sources, thereby ensuring a stable supply of electricity for the surrounding areas.

This project positions itself as a model case for energy storage systems within Japan, specifically in how they can effectively regulate the supply and demand of energy in a rapidly evolving energy landscape. By harnessing synergies between the two collaborating companies, Nippon Chikudenchi and Digital Grid, the project aims to create new energy values while addressing the ongoing challenges of fluctuating power demand.

Collaboration Framework

Nippon Chikudenchi and Digital Grid bring their respective strengths to this collaborative endeavor. Nippon Chikudenchi will oversee the overall development, operation, and on-site management of the project. Meanwhile, Digital Grid will utilize its digital grid platform as an aggregator to support market entry for demand-supply adjustments. This partnership is expected to establish a sustainable power adjustment model that integrates technology, operations, and market dynamics.

As the adoption of renewable energy sources grows, the variability in power supply and demand has become a critical issue for Japan's energy system. Energy storage facilities like the NC Tottori City Plant are increasingly recognized for their role in bridging the time gap between electricity generation and consumption. They serve as foundational infrastructure that supports grid stability and enhances the energy market's sophistication.

Future Developments

Looking ahead, Nippon Chikudenchi plans to expand energy storage facilities across Japan. Their vision includes the establishment of a regional energy model that interlinks wholesale markets, demand-supply adjustment markets, capacity markets, and disaster response energy support. Through collaboration with Digital Grid, they aim to contribute to the stable utilization of renewable energy and the realization of a decarbonized society.
