The Highly Anticipated Sequel to Award-Winning Picture Book 'Neko to Kotori' Released on October 2

Exciting Release of 'Aoi Kotori'

The much-awaited sequel to the beloved picture book 'Neko to Kotori' is finally here. On October 2, World Cultural Publishing will launch 'Aoi Kotori,' a follow-up to the award-winning story that won accolades like the Japan Picture Book Award and the Parent-Child Reading Book Award.

' Neko to Kotori,' published three years ago, captured hearts with its perspective from a cat. In contrast, 'Aoi Kotori' unfolds the narrative from the view of a little bird, offering a fresh lens through which to see the world.

The original book has enchanted a diverse readership, from children to adults, with readers praising its realistic depictions of a cat and the intricate wood grain of home walls. Comments such as, "It smells of tea and flowers" from a reader in their 50s, and, "Its depth makes you want to read it over and over" from a reader in their 30s, highlight the emotional connection fostered by this picture book.

'Aoi Kotori' is anticipated to deliver a similarly heartwarming and thought-provoking tale, accompanied by stunning illustrations that evoke the senses of smell and sound.

About 'Aoi Kotori'

In this narrative, the blue little bird searches for branches to build a precious nest, venturing through the forest day after day in search of a sound. One day, it encounters a cat that cannot smell. The bird pleads, "I have a favor to ask. Could you share some of the branches you have there?" The story delicately unravels the brave actions the bird family takes for the cat that has lost its sense of smell, showcasing themes of familial warmth, empathy, coexistence with nature, and the blossoming of hope in the face of separation.

Author's Message from Hiroshi Tateno

Why aren't the branches sought by the little bird found in the forest? This missing resource is attributed to the cat society's indiscriminate use of the branches for their own needs. The extreme consumption of natural resources disrupts the balance of the ecological cycle, impacting numerous creatures reliant on a single species.

The natural world functions within a dynamic relationship of balance, influenced by forces beyond human understanding. The story prompts us to consider the potential ramifications of such one-sided exploitation on resource circulation. In the conclusion, the cat undergoes a small yet significant awakening thanks to the bird's plea. This action, though seemingly minor, could pave the way for all cats, should they choose to act similarly.

However, the distortions in the Earth's environment seemingly run too deep to be solved by simple gestures. The narrative cleverly parallels the cat with the human world while the little bird embodies nature. The bird consistently exhibits kindness towards the cat, offering without expectation, even when hurt. Yet, if the cat doesn’t recognize this kindness, it risks its own demise.
