Abu Dhabi's Thrilling Role in F1: The Movie

The much-anticipated release of F1: The Movie, which premiered at the breathtaking Yas Marina Circuit, highlights Abu Dhabi's significant contribution to this cinematic journey. A special behind-the-scenes video was recently unveiled, showcasing adrenaline-packed scenes and exclusive commentary from the film’s cast and crew about the high-octane moments captured during the 2024 Etihad Airways Formula 1 Grand Prix.

To commemorate Abu Dhabi's starring role, a glamorous red carpet premiere took place at a specially constructed cinema right at the Yas Marina circuit. This venue not only served as a key filming location but also played a central role in the film's narrative. The premiere event allowed attendees to experience the film’s essence in a substantial way.

Newly released behind-the-scenes footage demonstrates the ambitious scale of production in Abu Dhabi, featuring exclusive interviews with director Joseph Kosinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and leading actor Brad Pitt. Kosinski described filming in Abu Dhabi as a “privilege,” noting the stunning settings, appreciative support, and inviting nature of the local population as essential elements that made shooting there a unique experience. Bruckheimer praised the “phenomenal cooperation” of local partners, expressing deep gratitude for their efforts in realizing the film's vision. Brad Pitt simply remarked, “Abu Dhabi is stunning,” echoing the cast's admiration for the city’s rich beauty and the remarkable production experience they encountered.

F1: The Movie was filmed in Abu Dhabi on three separate occasions, racking up a total of 29 filming days at iconic locations including Yas Marina Circuit, Zayed International Airport, and twofour54 Studios. Notably, key racing sequences were filmed live during the Grand Prix, marking a cinematic first that underscores Abu Dhabi’s capability to deliver innovative storytelling.

This project was made possible through close collaboration with the Creative Media Authority (CMA), the Abu Dhabi Film Commission (ADFC), and local production partner Epic Films. Over 280 members of the local crew participated in the filming, alongside 15 interns from the UAE who gained hands-on experience by integrating with the international production team. This film production further enhances Abu Dhabi's burgeoning reputation as a world-class hub for cinematic storytelling.

Mohamed Dobay, interim director general of the Creative Media Authority, commented, “From production to premiere, Abu Dhabi played a key role in bringing this story to life. This project is a milestone for our film ecosystem, reflecting both the scale of collaboration and the depth of local talent involved. Hosting the premiere at the circuit is a moment of pride for the Emirate.” Sameer Al Jaberi, director of the Abu Dhabi Film Commission, added, “This film showcases the full scope of what Abu Dhabi offers as a global production destination. From live-action filming at the Grand Prix to seamless logistics and highly skilled local crews, F1: The Movie is a prime example of how our rebates program and ecosystem can support world-class filmmaking from start to finish.”

Guests at the Abu Dhabi premiere enjoyed a uniquely curated experience, including Formula 1 racing simulators, close-up views of the official APXGP car, and exclusive access to props from the film, such as the racing helmet and suit featured on screen. This immersive event transported attendees into the world of F1: The Movie.
