Exciting Children's Sports Event at Yasukuni Shrine Engages Local Families

Engaging Local Youth at Yasukuni Shrine

On January 31, an exciting community event took place at Yasukuni Shrine, the "Kids School in Yasukuni Shrine." This event allowed local children to enjoy a range of activities designed to promote physical fitness and creativity. With a festive atmosphere akin to a local festival, children dashed with joy along the shrine's path.

The event featured running sessions led by notable athletes, including Tomohiro Ito, who achieved a remarkable fourth place in the men's 1600-meter relay at the 2004 Athens Olympics, and Naoki Iihara, a former 400-meter hurdles champion. The running classes were set in three sessions, each accommodating up to 30 participants. Not only did these sessions focus on proper running techniques, but they also included a 20-meter dash measuring opportunity that opened participation to both children and adults, creating a fun environment to experience the thrill of running.

During the running clinic, participants engaged in various exercises, including the one-legged hop "Kenken" and skipping, fostering awareness of their strides. Ten-year-old Sayaka Saito shared her experience, stating, "When I skipped, it felt like I was running faster. I learned useful tips for my running!" Another young participant, 10-year-old Yusei Matsumoto, mentioned, "I realized that I was using the wrong arm to start, and I could improve my timing on the 20-meter dash. Running here at the shrine feels refreshing."

The brainchild behind this unique event is Hisashi Kitazawa, the representative of Chiyoda Athlete Club Tokyo. Kitazawa expressed, "I wanted to create an opportunity for local children to be the stars and engage in physical activities in the area where I grew up. Though it's not permitted to run within the shrine grounds, they kindly allowed us to use a section of the path, and seeing the kids enjoy themselves was heartwarming."

In addition to the running clinic, the event included a rich variety of other activities. Collaborating with Ito and the other athletes, they offered T-shirt design workshops, a parent-child bicycle course, and a jewelry polishing booth, ensuring a range of educational experiences for the children.

Ito emphasized the importance of providing diverse activities for kids: "Chiyoda Ward lacks spacious areas for physical activity. By securing this location, we could offer great opportunities for local children. We're thankful for the support from the neighborhood community. I hope events like this allow kids to realize their potential and help them discover their talents. People joined randomly, and there's an interesting appeal to conducting sports activities in a non-traditional setting."

While the children were having a blast participating in various activities, it wasn't just them who were enjoying themselves. Kohta Aizu, representative of Clat Studio—operated by Chikyubito Inc.—was delighted with the festival-like atmosphere at the venue, situated near a bungee trampoline booth. "I was pleasantly surprised! It feels just like a festival here, and it's fantastic!" he exclaimed.

At the event, Clat Studio provided a booth for children to create their own T-shirts. The excitement was palpable as kids pressed designs onto plain shirts, with many seen proudly wearing their freshly created shirts soon after.

The event revealed a range of interests among the children; some ran, others bounced on the trampoline, while many engaged with STEAM education concepts. Aizu reflected, "It’s an incredible opportunity to be part of an event where so many individuals come together to put smiles on children's faces. This event fosters connections among us all and truly creates memorable experiences."

The running experience provided at the shrine wasn't just about participating in a sport; it served as a wider educational and developmental opportunity for children.

Clat Studio looks forward to participating in more community events, continuing to enhance the local community together with everyone involved.
