Engaging Craftsmanship: Four Contemporary Artists Showcase Their Work in Ginza

Engaging Craftsmanship in Ginza

From March 19 to March 29, 2026, Wako in Ginza will host an exceptional exhibition titled "Four Artists of Craft Expression" at the Seiko House Hall. This event will highlight the innovative works of four prominent artists in the fields of lacquerware, metalwork, and ceramics, all of whom have established their unique styles and garnered considerable acclaim both domestically and internationally.

Featured Artists

1. Akihiro Ikeda - A lacquer artist renowned for his ability to evoke a sophisticated world filled with delicate mother-of-pearl and maki-e, Ikeda creates small-scale works that transport viewers into an exquisite digital realm. His distinct approach marries traditional techniques with contemporary creativity.

2. Seikichi Hasegawa - Specializing in metalwork, Hasegawa employs advanced techniques such as inlay and openwork, crafting innovative objects centered around traditional tea ceremony utensils. His work explores the boundaries of form and function.

3. Akio Niisato - A ceramic artist pursuing refined beauty through translucent pointillist patterns on his pieces, Niisato explores the theme of 'light' in ceramics. His efforts represent a blend of aesthetics influenced by both modern and historical contexts.

4. Masayasu Mitsuke - Continuing the tradition of Kutani red painting, Mitsuke's intricate designs merge classical techniques with a modern sensibility. His works exhibit a high level of refinement, capturing the elegance inherent in traditional craftsmanship.

Each of these artists shares a philosophy centered around drawing inspiration from beauty while highlighting their individual expressions. Mitsuke notes, "I aim to create works that reflect the dignity of traditional techniques while consciously developing my own expression." Their collective dedication to exploring the essence of their materials opens up new possibilities in craftsmanship, creating a space where their distinct sensibilities resonate.
