Ikenga Yasunari's First Solo Exhibition: "Beginning with Girls"

Art lovers, mark your calendars! The Bunkamura Gallery is set to host the debut solo exhibition of renowned artist Ikenga Yasunari, titled "Beginning with Girls." This exciting event will run from January 10 to January 27, 2026, showcasing Yasunari's latest creations that reflect his ongoing dedication to the revival of figurative painting within the realm of Japanese art.

The exhibition features stunning pieces that blend the unique texture of hemp cloth with the vibrant particles of natural pigments. Yasunari's artworks evoke a captivating blend of serenity and passionate allure, drawing viewers into a world where tradition meets innovation. The centerpiece of this display includes his recent works, along with some of his iconic pieces, celebrating the ongoing evolution of contemporary bijin-ga (beautiful women paintings).

Among the highlights, visitors will find the enchanting work titled "Nanakoko 2: Nanako" measuring 45.0 × 45.0 cm, created with a combination of hemp cloth, mineral colors, glue, ink, and gold and silver dust. Another standout piece, "Bay Area: Anna," at 60.0 × 60.0 cm, reflects the artist's skillful application of traditional techniques in a modern context. Additionally, the piece "Slight Poison: Yoshino" at 20.0 cm × 50.0 cm showcases Yasunari's unique approach to color and texture.

Adding to the excitement, a special workshop titled "Creating an Original Calendar Using Metallic Foil and Clay" will be held on January 11, 2026. Participants will have the chance to use Yasunari's original giclée prints, applying metallic foil and clay to create a personal calendar to take home. This hands-on experience provides a rare opportunity to learn from Yasunari himself and witness his techniques up close. There will be two sessions for the workshop, the first from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM and the second from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Each session is limited to five participants aged 13 and over, with a participation fee of ¥4,400 (including tax).
