EGI Battery Launches Advanced Manufacturing Campus in Michigan for Lithium-Ion Batteries

EGI Battery's New Manufacturing Home in Michigan

Introduction

In an ambitious move to strengthen the United States' position in advanced battery technology, EGI Battery Inc. has established its first American manufacturing campus located at 300 North Zeeb Road in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This initiative not only signifies a milestone for the company but also addresses the pressing need for high-performance battery solutions across various critical sectors, including aerospace and electric aviation.

The Ann Arbor Campus

The newly launched facility spans an initial footprint of approximately 15,000 square feet dedicated to manufacturing and laboratory functions, complemented by 5,000 square feet designated for office space. Importantly, the campus has been designed with scalability in mind, allowing for future expansion to reach a total capacity of 130,000 square feet. EGI has committed to a phased rollout, with Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) scheduled for the end of Q1 2026 and the Start of Production (SOP) anticipated in Q3 2026.

The manufacturing operation will initially focus on processes such as electrolyte filling, aging, sealing, and grading. The production lines are designed to reach a throughput of one part per minute (ppm), projecting an annual output of up to 300,000 cells when operating at full capacity across three shifts. This infrastructure aims to produce about 40 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery capacity annually, specifically targeting the needs of Class-1 and Class-2 drones.

Future Expansion Plans

Phase 2 of EGI's strategy, projected to commence in 2027, plans to incorporate additional core processes from electrode fabrication to cell assembly. As this phase rolls out, the production throughput is expected to double to two ppm, with an annual capacity target of 600,000 cells, equating to approximately 80 MWh. This expansion highlights EGI's commitment to meeting the increased demands of mission-critical applications in a secure and efficient manner.

By 2028, EGI envisions supporting roughly 100 job positions at the Zeeb Campus, paving the way for economic growth in the region.

Technological Innovation

EGI Battery is at the forefront of battery innovation, employing advanced technology that enhances the performance of lithium-ion cells. The company’s expertise includes using silicon-enhanced and graphite anodes tailored to client-specific needs, creating a modular manufacturing approach that is responsive to market demands. This cutting-edge technology not only promises high performance but also a scalable production process that prioritizes national security and compliance with the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Commitment to Quality and Compliance

EGI has developed its strategy around maintaining high standards of quality and compliance, aiming for at least 95% of its materials to be NDAA-compliant by 2028. This focus ensures the batteries produced align with aerospace and defense procurement requirements, thus reinforcing the company's reliability in high-stakes environments.

As Mark Smith, CEO of MI-HQ, mentioned, “Supporting EGI’s growth in Ann Arbor not only enhances the local economy but also solidifies Michigan’s role in the future of industrial battery innovation.”

Conclusion

As EGI Battery Inc. embarks on this exciting journey in Ann Arbor, it exemplifies a growing national commitment to establishing a robust and secure supply chain for lithium-ion battery manufacturing. By investing in advanced technology and fostering local job growth, EGI is poised to play a significant role in powering the future of electric aviation, drones, and robotics, thereby contributing to America's technological and industrial advancement.
