Carbon Neutrality Education: Engaging Young Minds in Setagaya

Inspiring the Next Generation: Carbon Neutrality Education at Kunimoto Elementary

On April 21, 2025, Tanso-man GX, led by CEO Junji Fukumoto, held a special class on carbon neutrality for sixth graders at Kunimoto Elementary School in Setagaya, Tokyo. The session aimed to illuminate the concept of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and the importance of achieving carbon neutrality. Using engaging videos and interactive activities, Fukumoto made the topic accessible and relatable for the students, encouraging them to connect their daily actions with environmental impacts.

Class Structure and Student Engagement

The lesson began with a short animation that illustrated the causes of global warming and its effects on the natural environment. This introduction piqued the students' curiosity, leading them to reflect on their own lives. In groups, they discussed various daily scenarios where they might be contributing to CO₂ emissions, such as during their morning routines or while using electricity at home. The students then used sticky notes to visualize their insights, sparking numerous revelations about energy usage in situations they hadn't previously considered.

To deepen their understanding, the class engaged in quizzes that highlighted the problems related to increasing CO₂ levels. Students were often astonished to learn how everyday actions, like transporting food or producing water, are tied to energy consumption. This interactive approach ensured that the lesson was both educational and engaging, keeping the children's interest piqued throughout.

After the class concluded, each student summarized their learnings in an A4 report. Many expressed their thoughts in unique ways, such as realizing that carbon neutrality involves balancing CO₂ emissions with nature's absorption, rather than merely eliminating emissions. Comments like, “I want to be more conscious of electricity use going forward,” and “I’d like to share what I learned today with my family,” demonstrated how impactful the lesson was.

About Kunimoto Elementary School

Kunimoto Elementary School, located in Setagaya, Tokyo, is a private institution celebrating its 71st year of existence. Operating under the Kunimoto Academy, which includes education from kindergarten to high school, the school emphasizes the principles of sincerity, simplicity toward nature, and a heart that understands gratitude and giving back. By fostering a low student-to-teacher ratio, Kunimoto encourages the emotional and intellectual development of each child.

The school has taken proactive steps to integrate education on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and environmental issues into its curriculum. This includes not only science classes but also cross-disciplinary subjects like social studies and art to encourage a holistic understanding of sustainable societies. By embracing programs offered by external experts, the school has laid a strong foundation for environmental education, making Tanso-man GX's initiative a fitting addition to its curriculum.

Future Initiatives

Tanso-man GX is dedicated to promoting carbon neutrality across regions by supporting companies and municipalities with CO₂ emissions visualization, decarbonization consulting, and renewable energy implementation. In line with this mission, they are also devoted to environmental education for the next generation. By offering workshops, educational materials, and outreach classes for students, Tanso-man GX aims to help children view decarbonization as a personal responsibility they can influence.
