Sinopec's Cultural Ambassadors Initiative in Algiers
On November 13, 2025, the China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, commonly known as Sinopec, held a significant ceremony in Algiers, focusing on the initiative "In Search of Youth Cultural Ambassadors between China and Algeria." This event marked the final selection and award presentation for five exceptional young individuals who have been appointed as cultural ambassadors, acknowledging their efforts to strengthen the bonds between the two nations and share stories of bilateral cooperation through the perspectives of youth.
The initiative serves as a vital platform for cultural exchange and is a concrete step in realizing the goal of youth development proposed by the Forum on China-Arab Cooperation. Sinopec's commitment to fostering relationships in Africa, particularly in energy and cultural sectors, stands out as a notable point of emphasis during this event.
Yongsheng Yu, brand director at Sinopec, stressed the importance of balanced collaboration in Africa. He stated that "these young ambassadors represent the potential for civilizational exchanges to invigorate the next generation and become a crucial link for mutual understanding." This sentiment was echoed by Smaïl Debeche, president of the Algeria-China Friendship Association, who praised the program for building bridges that facilitate communication and understanding between youth from both countries.
Highlighting the initiative's role in not only showcasing the diversity and allure of their cultures but also in showcasing Sinopec's proactive approach to promoting mutual learning and authentic relationships, Debeche noted, "This program not only enhances our cultural appeal but also emphasizes Sinopec's role in fostering sincere relationships."
Further echoing these sentiments, Malika Bendouda, Algeria's Minister of Culture and Arts, shared her personal experiences with Chinese philosophy during her youth, particularly the lasting influence of Confucian thought. She encouraged the youth from both nations to become cultural ambassadors, forging lasting bonds through exchanges that ensure intergenerational friendship.
Guo Jianjun, Economic and Commercial Counselor at the Chinese embassy in Algeria, also expressed the deeply rooted friendship that dates back to the ancient Silk Road, now flourishing under the Belt and Road Initiative. "The youth represent the future of the friendship between China and Algeria. We expect them to be open-minded and innovative in writing new chapters of cooperation between our nations," he concluded.
Since the program's inception, there has been a remarkable response from the "Generation Z." Algerian youth submitted a total of 165 contributions, which included short videos and vlogs that highlighted goodwill stories as well as narratives around the Belt and Road Initiative. After several rounds of evaluations, 30 entries made it to the semifinals, and from these, 15 finalists competed on stage before five were ultimately selected as ambassadors.
