Opening of World's Largest Exhibition on Ancient American Civilizations at Shanghai Museum
A Journey Through Ancient American Civilizations at the Shanghai Museum
The Shanghai Museum has officially opened its doors to "On Top of the World Tree: Ancient Civilizations of the Americas", marking the world's largest exhibition dedicated to these rich cultures. This monumental exhibit showcases 1,129 collections consisting of nearly 3,000 artifacts, sourced from some of the most prestigious museums and cultural institutions in Mexico, Peru, and China. This collaborative effort is a joint venture of the Shanghai Museum, the Secretariat of Culture of Mexico, INAH, and the Ministry of Culture of Peru.
Central to this exhibition is the World Tree, a cosmological concept shared among various Native American civilizations. Spanning nearly three millennia, it provides a comprehensive overview of ancient American societies. Notably, the exhibition also features exceptional artifacts from seven provinces across China, adding a unique perspective to the narrative of ancient civilizations.
Located in People's Square, the Shanghai Museum transforms under the symbolic arch of the World Tree, creating an immersive environment inspired by the ancient Americas. Visual motifs, such as corn, jaguars, feathered serpents, and pyramids, blend seamlessly into the museum's layout, evoking the various civilizations on display. With an area exceeding 7,000 square meters, the exhibition goes beyond traditional chronological presentations, positioning artifacts within their historical contexts to highlight intercivilizational links.
Visitors will engage with realistic reconstructions complemented by multimedia installations, inviting them to experience the ancient civilizations through immersive projections, environmental themes, and participatory setups that draw from ritual practices, sacred architecture, mythology, and ceremonial ball games. Together, these elements illustrate the intricate technical achievements and spiritual worlds of Mesoamerican civilizations, offering an immersive spatial experience that connects archaeology with mythology.
Beyond the main exhibition spaces, additional immersive experiences cover an area of 10,000 square meters, providing visitors with much more than just visual spectacles. Each step of the journey delves deeper into the ancient Americas, from the cornfield outside People's Square to the towering World Tree in the central atrium. This interaction involves all senses, shaping a holistic experience that combines visual, olfactory, and gustatory elements.
The Shanghai Museum has partnered with various institutions, including the Shanghai Zoo, the Shanghai World Expo Cultural Park, and the Chen Shan Botanical Garden, to develop an integrated, multidimensional curatorial approach focused on the interaction between artifacts, historical figures, animals, plants, and food. This city-wide collaborative program is inspired by the World Tree concept, expanding the exhibition's reach and enhancing the cultural experience throughout Shanghai.
To facilitate accessibility and foster public engagement, the Shanghai Museum has introduced a comprehensive “land-sea-air” model, featuring interdisciplinary ticket options. This initiative not only enhances the exhibition's visibility but also creates thematic, immersive consumption spaces that promote a closer connection between the exhibition and urban life.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the Museum will offer over 3,000 culture-inspired products, “Museum Nights,” multifunctional recreational spaces, virtual reality immersive experiences, dedicated dining and relaxation areas, and a variety of educational programs and resources. Throughout the exhibition period, metro trains, buses, tourist coaches, and cruise boats on the Huangpu River will sport personalized designs to amplify the exhibition's visibility across the city, infusing Shanghai with the atmosphere of ancient American civilizations.
This remarkable exhibition not only showcases the splendor of ancient cultures but also creates an enduring bridge between the past and the present, providing a profound narrative experience for all visitors, from those keen to learn about history to families looking for an engaging outing.
The Shanghai Museum stands as a testament to the beauty and complexity of ancient American civilizations, inviting everyone to partake in this cultural journey into the depths of history.
