3DGS Sets a New Standard for Media Production at IBC 2026
During the highly anticipated IBC 2026 event in Amsterdam, XGRIDS, a leader in spatial intelligence, introduced an innovative technology that is poised to change the way media is produced. This technology, known as 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), allows production teams to seamlessly incorporate photorealistic locations into virtual environments, enhancing the quality of both live broadcasts and virtual productions.
The traditional methods of transforming physical locations into digital environments have often been tedious and labor-intensive. However, XGRIDS is streamlining this process with cutting-edge devices such as the Lixel K2 spatial scanner and the PortalCam. These tools excel in capturing intricate spatial details and visual information that can be processed locally using Lixel CyberColor (LCC). The resulting 3DGS environments can then be effortlessly imported into Unreal Engine through the XGRIDS LCC plugin, facilitating a more efficient workflow from real-world locations to digital production.
During a session at the IBC, product manager CM Fey provided a live demonstration, illustrating how this innovative workflow can be integrated into real-world production processes. Instead of merely viewing spatial capture as a standalone visual stage, the 3DGS workflow enables the physical location to transform into a versatile digital production asset that can be creatively modified and reused across various projects. Notably, this workflow is compatible with major production platforms like Pixotope, Aximmetry, Disguise, and nDisplay.
The following day, filmmaker and visual effects supervisor Amir Ovadia Steklov captivated attendees with his presentation titled "3DGS in Film Production". In his talk, he showcased how he successfully captured a spaceship film set using PortalCam, integrating the resulting 3DGS environment within cinematic visual effects workflows. This example highlighted the practical applicability and versatility of the 3DGS approach within various media sectors, including film and live broadcasting.
Furthermore, the transition to 3DGS is already gaining momentum in the media and entertainment industries. The PortalCam garnered accolades, winning four awards at the NAB Show 2026's
