Settlement Reached for Groundwater Pollution Claims Against Amazon Data Services

Class Action Settlement for Groundwater Pollution

A significant class action settlement of $20.5 million has emerged from a lawsuit against Amazon Data Services, Inc. (ADS), addressing serious concerns regarding groundwater pollution in the Lower Umatilla Basin Groundwater Management Area (LUBGWMA). This decision comes as a result of allegations that ADS's operations have contributed to nitrate contamination in the region's groundwater, posing potential health risks to residents.

Background of the Lawsuit

The lawsuit, officially titled Pearson et al. v. Amazon Data Services, Inc., alleges that ADS's wastewater management practices have led to the contamination of local groundwater supplies. As a result, residents in Morrow and Umatilla Counties, Oregon, have been exposed to altered water quality, with nitrates known to be hazardous both for human health and the environment.

Although ADS denies these allegations and any claims of wrongdoing, the settlement aims to alleviate the impact on affected residents and improve community health and safety.

Who is Eligible?

The settlement is open to all individuals who own or rent properties or reside within the LUBGWMA. This broad eligibility reflects the extent of the reach of the contamination and the concerns raised in the lawsuit.

Benefits of the Settlement

The financial compensation from this settlement will be allocated towards various initiatives aimed at mitigating the impacts of the contamination:

1. Private Well Projects: This includes funding for residents who need to either extend or modify their private drinking water wells to access the cleaner
