2025 Chinese Opera Festival in Kunshan: Celebrating a Cultural Tradition

The 2025 Chinese Opera Festival has officially commenced in Kunshan, Jiangsu, marking a significant event aimed at showcasing and preserving the rich traditions of Chinese opera. Organized jointly by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, the festival opened its doors on September 8, 2025, and will continue until September 20, 2025.

This year's focus is on the martial arts aspect of Chinese opera, moving beyond the traditional roles of Sheng (male), Dan (female), Jing (painted face), and Chou (clown). The inaugural performance featured memorable excerpts from renowned performances, notably the famous Beijing Opera piece, "The Eighteen Arhats Subdue the Raptor Demon." This lively introduction set the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating festival dedicated to both the preservation and innovation of traditional Chinese performing arts.

Throughout the festival, a remarkable lineup of performances will take place, showcasing the talents of 20 martial artists from across China, culminating in a series of 10 joint performances that highlight the continuous evolution of traditional Chinese opera. Audiences can expect an engaging blend of both classic and contemporary interpretations of longstanding cultural forms.

The festival’s achievements were honored during the opening ceremony with the presentation of certificates to selected participants of the National Leading Talent Development Program for Chinese Opera 2025. Additionally, several institutions recognized for their outstanding contributions to opera productions from 2020 to 2024 were presented with awards.

The festival itself is structured into five major programs, including opening and closing ceremonies, a national showcase of opera performers focusing on martial arts theater, invited performances of celebrated productions, opera symposiums, and preservation initiatives for endangered forms of opera. These initiatives are complemented by five extension programs aimed at promoting cultural exchange and tourism, including the campaign "Watch Opera, Visit Jiangsu," a special exhibition at the Chinese Opera Museum, a traditional opera marketplace, and a digital promotion platform.

With a total of 39 performances planned, the festival will showcase 107 productions across 53 ensembles, representing 31 different opera traditions. These diverse performances will be held at various venues, including traditional theaters, historical sites, museums, universities, and scenic locations, offering an all-encompassing cultural experience for attendees.

Kunshan itself holds a special place in the history of Chinese opera, being the birthplace of Kunqu, the oldest form of Chinese opera. This festival marks the seventh consecutive year that Kunshan has served as the host city, and organizers have recently unveiled a new three-year action plan aimed at steering the future development of the festival.

From 2018 to 2024, the Kunshan Opera Festival has featured an impressive array of genres, including puppet shows and shadow plays, and has attracted significant participation, bringing together 494 organizations that contributed to 295 performances showcasing 606 excerpts, both live and online. The event has consistently drawn an exceptional and diverse audience, reaffirming the cultural significance of Chinese opera on a global stage.

With its blend of traditional heritage and modern interpretations, the 2025 Chinese Opera Festival stands as a noteworthy celebration of the vitality and resilience of this age-old art form, promising to enchant and inspire audiences for years to come.
