Understanding Living Room Storage Needs
In February 2026, LIXIL Housing Research Institute conducted a comprehensive survey with 400 participants aged 20 to 50 living in standalone houses. The aim was to explore common storage issues within homes, particularly focusing on the living room.
Key Findings
The results revealed that
65.0% of respondents identified the living room as the area where items are most prone to clutter. Furthermore,
66.5% emphasized the importance of keeping the living room organized, indicating a strong desire for efficient storage solutions in this space. Given these statistics, it’s no surprise that over half of the participants (specifically
55.8%) expressed a desire for larger storage spaces within their living rooms.
When asked about the types of items they would prefer to store in new storage areas, the following responses were noted:
- - Daily essentials stock: 42.5%
- - Seasonal items (like heaters and decorations): 32.0%
- - Cleaning supplies and vacuum cleaners: 31.8%
- - Clothing and outerwear: 30.0%
This indicates that participants prioritize practical storage solutions that cater to both everyday needs, as well as seasonal adjustments.
Preferences for Concealed Storage
Interestingly, while many seek to enhance their storage solutions, a significant
43.0% of respondents prefer completely concealed storage. However,
37.8% are willing to accept some visibility in their storage, suggesting a nuanced approach where a balance between visibility and concealment is favored. Only
10.3% of participants stated they have no need to conceal items, suggesting a trend towards aesthetic organization.
Ideal Storage Styles
In terms of preferred storage styles, the survey showed that a
distributed storage approach, which incorporates various organized spaces across different rooms, was favored by
35.8% of participants. In contrast, a
concentrated storage solution, emphasizing larger storage units in a single area, attracted only
19.3% support; however, there is notable interest in a combination of both styles, with
29.8% of respondents wishing to blend the two approaches.
Summary of Storage Insights
The survey underlines crucial insights into living room storage preferences:
- - Top cluttered areas: Living room (65.0%), Dining room (28.5%), Children’s room (28.5%).
- - Areas needing organization: Living room (66.5%), Kitchen (33.8%), Dining room (32.8%).
- - A significant 67.5% of respondents experience stress due to cluttered spaces.
- - 55.8% desire large storage solutions in their living rooms.
This research reflects broader consumer trends towards organization and decluttering, particularly in high-usage areas of the home like the living room. As these insights illustrate, consumers prioritize functionality, aesthetic appeal, and organization in their storage requirements.
