Luca Shaw Triumphs at Round 1 of 2026 Monster Energy Pro Downhill Series

The 2026 Monster Energy Pro Downhill Series kicked off with an exhilarating Round 1 event from March 25 to 29 at Ride Rock Creek Bike Park, located in the picturesque region of Zirconia, North Carolina. This event served as a showcase for elite mountain biking talent, as riders faced a rigorous course that combined speed and technical challenges.

Among the standout competitors was 29-year-old Luca Shaw from Hendersonville, North Carolina, who claimed victory in the Pro Men Division. Shaw's performance was remarkable, delivering a near-flawless run on a track that was clocked at under two minutes, finishing with an impressive time of 150.955 seconds. His achievement not only marked a strong start to the season but also earned him valuable ranking points.

Shaw was joined on the podium by 21-year-old Ryan Pinkerton from Aliso Viejo, California, who secured second place, just over one second behind with a time of 151.961. Pinkerton, the reigning 2025 Elite Men's Downhill National Champion, demonstrated his skill on the challenging course, finishing within striking distance of Shaw.

The competition was fierce, with a total of 135 riders vying for the top positions. Ryder Lawrence, an 18-year-old competitor from Murrieta, California, represented the Monster Army team and finished strong in fourth place. Dante Silva, aged 23 and from Chula Vista, California, also showcased his abilities, taking fifth place with a competitive time that kept him within three seconds of the victor.

The Pro Women Division saw Taylor Ostgaard, another Monster Army rider, finish in a commendable fifth place, demonstrating her prowess amid tough competition. The event featured several age categories, with riders displaying exceptional talent across the board.

In the Cat 1 17–18 Men’s category, Luke Mallen shone brightly, taking first place, while Connor Knipscheer secured third, and Tyler Wagoner followed closely in fourth. Jade Savage stood out in the 17–18 Women’s class by finishing in third place, reflecting the competitiveness and depth of talent in the field.

Conditions for racing were ideal yet presented unique challenges. The track remained dry and dust-laden, which added an extra layer of difficulty, especially after the sudden drop in temperature from mid-80s to mid-50s overnight. Riders had to navigate their descent with precision as the course demanded both technical skill and speed.

As the dust from Round 1 of the Monster Energy Pro Downhill Series settles, the excitement within the mountain biking community continues to build. The venue, Rock Creek Bike Park, proved to be a thrilling starting point for what promises to be an intense series.

Upcoming challenges await as the second round is slated to take place from May 6 to 10 at Mountain Creek Bike Park in New Jersey. Following that, Round 3 is scheduled for July 15 to 19 at Solitude Mountain Resort in Utah, culminating in the fourth round and the USAC National Championship set to be hosted at Big Bear Lake, California, from July 22 to 26.
