FamilyMart's New Yuzu Ice Bar

FamilyMart, a leading convenience store chain in Japan, is set to launch its latest creation from the popular "産地と、コンビに、" ("From the Production Area to the Convenience Store") series. On July 29, 2025, a refreshing ice bar called "とろける食感ぎゅっとゆず" ("Melting Texture Yuzu") will hit the shelves, featuring the delicious juice of yuzu sourced directly from Kochi Prefecture. This delightful treat, priced at 184 yen (including tax, 198 yen), will be available at approximately 16,300 FamilyMart locations nationwide.

In addition, two other limited-edition products utilizing Kochi's yuzu will be introduced on the same day: the "ゆずクリーム大福" (Yuzu Cream Daifuku) priced at 139 yen (tax included, 150 yen) and "高知県産ゆずの冷しぶっかけうどん" (Chilled Udon with Kochi Yuzu and Steamed Chicken) available for 445 yen (tax included, 480 yen) in about 1,170 stores across the Chugoku and Shikoku regions.

Celebrating the Flavor of Kochi Prefecture

Kochi Prefecture holds the title for the highest yuzu production in Japan. Nevertheless, the area faces significant challenges, including a shortage of labor and aging farmers. The rigorous cultivation process involves overcoming steep terrain and managing the demands of harvesting yuzu using ladders and long-handled pruners. Despite these difficulties, the dedication of the farmers shines through in the quality of their yuzu fruit.

The yuzu ice bar embodies FamilyMart’s commitment to sustainable fruit production while promoting local farming. The ice bar contains 11% yuzu juice and incorporates yuzu peels, enhancing both the flavor and texture. The packaging artfully blends the series logo and Kochi Prefecture's promotional symbol, "高知家" (Kochi Family), spotlighting the region's agricultural charm.

To further celebrate the season's flavors, the yuzu cream daifuku and chilled udon will allow customers in the regions to indulge in diverse forms of yuzu. FamilyMart continues to take steps toward supporting local food production across Japan, bringing seasonal tastes to its customers.

In preparation for the launch, FamilyMart's team visited yuzu farmers in Kochi at the end of May 2025, where they interacted with students from the local Tosa Mountain School. They discussed the ice bar's development using the previous year's yuzu harvest, sampling the ice cream and exchanging feedback. The young students expressed delight in the ice bar's melting texture and refreshing yuzu flavor.

The visit coincided with an exciting phase in yuzu cultivation; the farmers noted the emergence of new buds and flowers, which are crucial to ensuring high-quality fruit in the upcoming harvest. However, they also highlighted the significant difficulties involved in pruning yuzu trees, particularly the skills required to ensure effective maintenance and harvesting from steep inclines.
