Sinopec and CATL Collaborate to Build 10,000 Battery Swap Stations for Green Mobility

Sinopec and CATL's Revolutionary Initiative

In a significant move for sustainable transportation, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, popularly known as Sinopec, has joined forces with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) to establish an extensive network of battery swap stations across China. This collaboration aims to construct a total of 10,000 battery exchange stations that promise to redefine mobility in an environmentally friendly manner.

On April 7, 2025, the two companies formalized their partnership in Beijing, marking a pivotal moment for both the energy and automotive sectors. Sinopec, one of the largest integrated energy and chemical companies in China, seeks to leverage its expansive network of energy infrastructure, while CATL, a global leader in battery production, will contribute its cutting-edge battery technology to facilitate this ambitious project.

Objectives of the Partnership

The primary objective of this partnership is to create a seamless battery swap experience for electric vehicle owners, akin to traditional refueling but significantly more efficient. The immediate goal for 2025 is to deploy at least 500 battery swap stations, with a strategic roadmap leading to the eventual establishment of 10,000 locations nationwide. This initiative is perfectly aligned with China's national strategy to promote new infrastructure and carbon-neutral transportation solutions.

Leadership Insights

Ma Yongsheng, Chairman of Sinopec, expressed the strategic importance of this partnership, stating, “This collaboration marks another milestone in Sinopec's commitment to energy transition and eco-friendly development. By combining our energy supply capabilities with CATL's advanced technology, we aim to build a comprehensive energy infrastructure that enhances the quality of life.”

Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Robin Zeng, Chairman and CEO of CATL, highlighted the crucial role of a robust energy supply network for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. He remarked, “This partnership will elevate the battery swapping model to new heights and invigorate sustainable development.”

Infrastructure Advantages

Sinopec boasts an extensive network, including 30,000 integrated energy stations, 28,000 convenience stores, and over 10,000 ultra-fast charging stations catering to 200 million customers daily. CATL’s collaboration with leading automotive manufacturers, such as Changan and NIO, has already introduced a varied range of vehicles featuring interchangeable battery systems, setting the stage for a diverse market presence.

The synergy of Sinopec’s widespread infrastructure and CATL's innovative battery solutions positions this collaboration as a transformative force in China’s energy and automotive landscape.

Future Prospects

The partnership promises to not only advance battery swap technology but also explore further synergies in carbon-neutral solutions, vehicle ecosystems, and battery materials. Future developments may include smart energy micro-grids incorporating solar energy, energy storage, and battery management systems, thus broadening the scope of advancements in the field.

As Sinopec and CATL embark on this groundbreaking journey, their efforts could pave the way for a paradigm shift in how energy is consumed and managed in the transportation sector, setting a benchmark for sustainable mobility solutions worldwide.
