Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko: A Nostalgic Luxury Experience
The Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko, operated by Onko Chishin, located in Shizuoka Prefecture's Higashi-Izu Town, is undergoing a transformative renovation, set to reopen on November 1, 2025. This destination hotel aims to embody the concept of "Nostalgic Luxury," merging elements reminiscent of Showa-era hot spring towns with modern comfort. Each of the 16 rooms will feature ocean views and open-air baths fed by natural hot springs, redefining luxury for the modern traveler.
A Grand Opening with Community Involvement
To unveil the renovations, an exclusive preview event took place on October 20, where locals were invited to experience the newly designed spaces. Approximately 30 attendees, including the mayor of Higashi-Izu, tourism association members, and local stakeholders, celebrated the hotel’s rebirth. Mayor Shigeki Iwai expressed hope that this new establishment would enhance the value of Atagawa Onsen and invigorate the region's economy, paving the way for further development in Higashi-Izu.
During the preview, guests admired the thoughtful integration of local history, such as vintage posters and records from Atagawa’s heyday. Visitors were also impressed by the transformation of the former communal bath into luxurious suites, remarking on how much of the original bathing area's essence had been preserved.
Revitalizing Bath Culture Through Innovative Design
The renovation includes converting two former public baths into approximately 200 square meter suites, combining private luxury with the rich tradition of at-home bathing. Each suite will boast a private open-air bath, designed to provide the same sense of space and freedom as the original communal baths, and a sauna to blend tradition with wellness. The suites will creatively incorporate elements of the former baths into living spaces, enhancing the narrative of local bathing culture.
This bold transformation not only preserves the nostalgic essence of Atagawa's hot spring culture but also aligns with the evolving preferences of today’s travelers. By reducing the total number of rooms to 16, each suite can offer a more intimate experience combined with a luxurious space stretching from 90 to 200 square meters.
Commitment to Sustainability and Heritage
The renovation emphasizes sustainability by repurposing materials from the original structure. Concrete rubble collected during the refurbishment is integrated into artworks and signage around the hotel, reflecting the history of the area, which once provided stone for Edo Castle. This thoughtful re-use of resources aims to convey the narrative and heritage of the hotel’s past while ensuring the facility continues to evolve.
Additionally, former items like ashtrays and tableware from the prior establishment have been upcycled into lighting fixtures, maintaining the essence of the old hotel while contributing to the new aesthetic. This commitment to resourcefulness enhances the guest experience by subtly incorporating the old into the new.
Creating a Nostalgic Yet Luxurious Ambiance
In line with the concept of "Nostalgic Luxury," the hotel introduces new spaces such as the lounge bar "Shiomachi" and game lounge "Namima." These areas offer breathtaking ocean views in a serene setting while featuring music from vintage records and a menu of local wines and crafted drinks. The game lounge includes classic entertainment options, allowing visitors to connect over shared experiences, all within a thoughtfully designed atmosphere that balances nostalgia with modernity.
Culinary Delights Reflecting Izu’s Rich Heritage
The on-site restaurant, "Shio to Sakazuki," invites guests to savor the traditional flavors of Izu, emphasizing locally sourced ingredients like kinmedai (red snapper) and Ise ebi (lobster) in dishes crafted by a seasoned chef. The restaurant aims to reflect both the nostalgia and innovation inherent in modern Japanese cuisine, offering a dining experience that engages the senses.
Guests can also expect expertly paired beverages, including wines from Shizuoka's wineries, while enjoying breakfast featuring seasonal fish and local vegetables, designed to kickstart the day with freshness and flavor. The name "Shio to Sakazuki" encapsulates the essence of sharing unforgettable moments with loved ones against the picturesque backdrop of Izu’s coastal beauty.
