Bonsai Foods and University of Tokyo: A Collaborative Initiative for Disaster Preparedness Awareness
In an innovative move, Bonsai Foods Co., Ltd., based in Minato, Tokyo, in collaboration with the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Information Science, is set to launch the "Disaster Preparedness Academy". This interactive program for middle and high school students will take place from September 2025 to March 2026, focusing on disaster preparedness education.
This initiative aims to empower teenagers by enhancing their soft skills such as critical thinking, dialogue, problem-solving, and leadership. The program will allow students to engage in in-depth research that meets academic standards while exploring disaster preparedness firsthand. Throughout the six-month engagement, students will collaborate with peers from across the country, enhancing their research methodologies and presentation skills through conferences and contests.
Background of the Program
Last year, Bonsai Foods worked with the Arakawa Ward Board of Education to conduct a survey on disaster awareness among local middle school students. The results of this initiative saw students successfully presenting their findings at the Japan Disaster Information Society Conference. Such efforts highlight the commitment of Bonsai Foods and the University of Tokyo to improve disaster education in schools, addressing the existing gap in practical learning opportunities in this vital area.
