Pal System Launches Environmental Month with Community Cleanup Activities

Introduction

In an inspiring initiative to mark Environmental Month, the Pal System Cooperative Federation (Headquartered in Okubo, Shinjuku) kicked off its activities on June 6, 2025. Under the leadership of Chairman Masakazu Onshin, the organization rallied its employees for a community cleanup around their Higashi-Shinjuku headquarters. This effort not only aimed to beautify the local area but also sought to enhance awareness regarding pressing environmental issues.

Community Engagement

A total of 26 staff members participated in this meaningful event, collectively collecting an impressive weight of 4,130 grams of waste in just half an hour. As they walked the streets surrounding the headquarters, they were astonished by the amount of litter strewn along the pathways. The experience highlighted the significant challenge of littering in urban spaces and called attention to the need for responsible waste disposal.

After the cleanup, the team sorted and weighed the collected waste. The breakdown revealed 2,500 grams of combustible waste, 600 grams each of glass and cans, 280 grams of PET bottles, and 150 grams of non-combustible items. Furthermore, they discovered an illegally discarded computer monitor weighing approximately 20 kilograms, serving as a stark reminder of personal accountability in reducing waste.

The Impact of Littering

Litter not only tarnishes the beauty of our neighborhoods but also negatively affects waterways, contributing to the growing problem of marine debris. A significant portion of the plastic waste recollected during the cleanup had the potential to break down into microplastics, posing severe threats to marine ecosystems. This serves as a wake-up call for everyone to acknowledge the narrow line between waste and ecosystem preservation.

Protecting the Planet's Future

The Pal System Group has made significant strides in establishing environmental and energy policies in 2023, striving for the realization of a "decarbonized society," a "circular society," and a "nature-compatible society." This April, they announced their “Pal System Nature Positive Declaration,” reinforcing their commitment to curb global warming and preserve biodiversity. They emphasize the importance of sustainable practices designed to cherish the environment, ensuring future generations can also benefit from nature’s bounty.

Future Commitments

Moving forward, Pal System remains dedicated to understanding the current environmental landscape that surrounds daily life and is committed to contemplating actionable steps that can be taken now for a sustainable future.

Conclusion

As we look ahead to 2025, the International Year of Cooperatives, Pal System will continue to lead by example in advocating for environmental stewardship within the community. The recent cleanup is just one of many steps toward creating a more sustainable world. Their efforts demonstrate that local action can lead to a positive impact and inspire others to join the movement for a cleaner, greener planet.
