A New Era of Upcycling: Kimono Upcycle Cloth OHARIKO
Japan Reuse System Co., Ltd., headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, made a remarkable appearance at the Inbound Goods Expo held from June 24 to 26, 2026, at Tokyo Big Sight. This exhibition underscored the company's commitment to sustainable practices and centered around the innovative product "Kimono Upcycle Cloth OHARIKO."
Embracing Tradition through Upcycling
The Kimono Upcycle Cloth OHARIKO represents a pioneering effort to repurpose unwanted kimonos from within Japan, transforming them into practical and stylish products. Using their unique approach, the company manufactures kimono fabric that aims to support the autonomy of individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including people with disabilities and those living in poverty. The project's core product, titled "Kimono de Ohariko," collects discarded kimonos and repurposes them into distinctive textiles, embodying both environmental consciousness and social responsibility.
This initiative was launched in 2016 and has since garnered prestigious recognition, including the Environment Minister's Award for Excellence at the 2019 Environmental Human Resource Development Awards. The fabrics produced are extensively exported, primarily to Nordic countries, where they are utilized in traditional costumes and a variety of accessory productions.

Melding Tradition with Innovation: The Yamato Spirit Changing Chair "Iki"
In addition to showcasing the Kimono Upcycle Cloth, the exhibit featured the world debut of the Yamato Spirit Changing Chair "Iki." This innovative piece of furniture is crafted using upcycled kimono fabric and is enhanced with unique sanitizing and deodorizing treatments. One of its standout features is its customizable design, which allows it to seamlessly fit into the ambiance of any establishment, such as hotels or restaurants, thanks to its versatile "seven transformations" setup.
The manufacturing process of this chair highlights a commitment to social value creation, as it involves collaboration with Filipino women and welfare facilities in Japan, enhancing community engagement within the production ecosystem. Moreover, the chair itself is skillfully handcrafted by chair artisans in Shizuoka, showcasing Japan's exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to quality.
As the exporting of the unique Kimono Upcycle Cloth OHARIKO continues to grow, Japan Reuse System is actively seeking international partners interested in collaborating on this eco-friendly venture.
