Canton Fair Celebrates a Decade of Growth in Global Pet Industry

The 137th China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, recently concluded its Phase 3 event from May 1 to 5, marking an important milestone: the eleventh year of its dedicated exhibition zone for pet products and food. This specialized area, first introduced at the 116th session in 2014, has remarkably progressed alongside the pet industry, reflecting a shift as pets are increasingly seen not just as companions but as vital contributors to consumer expenditures.

Market data indicates a steady expansion across various pet industry segments, including food products, hygiene items, and advanced technology like smart feeders. According to Global Market Insights, the pet accessories market alone was valued at $23.4 billion in 2024 and is projected to soar to $49.6 billion by 2034, with an anticipated annual growth rate of 7.9%. As the sector matures, competition has become more intense, compelling companies to adapt continuously and innovate to meet evolving consumer demands.

Puyuan (Dalian) Pet Products Co., Ltd., which has participated in five Canton Fair events, appreciates the unique advantages this fair provides compared to niche exhibitions. May Wu, the Operation Manager at Puyuan, noted that the fair attracts a more diverse group of buyers and grants access to procurement teams often absent from specialized shows. This broader reach has facilitated access to new client segments and larger orders from major retailers and supermarkets.

On the other hand, Hangzhou TianYuan Pet Products Co., Ltd., showcases its commitment to innovation by introducing its latest products at every fair. Marketing Manager Haha commented, “A few years ago, this industry was still in its infancy, but now it has reached considerable scale.” With over two decades of experience, they have witnessed firsthand the transformative growth of this sector.

The Canton Fair has played a pivotal role in tracking the rapid advancement of the pet industry. Initially displaying everyday necessities like food and toys, the exhibition area has evolved into a hub for innovation, showcasing cutting-edge solutions that redefine pet care. Noteworthy highlights include award-winning devices that use voice commands and lasers to engage cats, reduce anxiety, and promote physical activity. Recent offerings also emphasize the comfort of cohabitation, featuring multifunctional furniture for pets and their owners, alongside oxygen-enriched mineral cat litter designed to enhance living environments.

The development of the pet products and food section at the Canton Fair not only reflects industry progress but also underscores the growing bond between humans and their furry companions. As the fair celebrates this decade-long evolution, it continues to pave the way for future innovations and growth within the pet market, fostering deeper connections and enhancing the lifestyles of both pets and their owners. The Canton Fair thus remains a crucial platform for businesses aiming to navigate and thrive in this dynamic and expanding landscape of the global pet economy.
