Landis+Gyr to Implement Grid Edge Technology for Virginia Cooperative Modernization
In a significant move to modernize energy infrastructure, Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) has announced a partnership with Landis+Gyr, selecting their innovative Revelo® grid edge intelligence platform. This collaboration aims to enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of the electric grid, servicing more than 183,000 members across Virginia. The new system will bring advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and real-time data analytics to the cooperative, enabling a smarter and more resilient energy network.
Peter Muhoro, REC's Chief Strategy, Technology, and Innovation Officer, emphasized the importance of this project in providing better reliability and affordability for their members. He noted that the Revelo platform’s edge processing capabilities are particularly valuable, allowing for dynamic load management and improved member engagement. These advancements will enable users to make informed decisions regarding energy consumption and costs, ultimately enhancing customer experience.
The Revelo® platform is designed to process high-resolution energy data in real time, giving utilities insights into the demands on the distribution circuits. This level of monitoring is expected to promote a more stable energy supply, even as the demand for distributed energy resources (DERs) continues to grow. Additionally, the new system will allow REC to offer variable pricing options, making energy use more flexible and cost-efficient for members.
This deployment also supports the integration of technologies such as virtual power plants, effectively leveraging renewable resources and electric vehicles (EVs) to create a more sustainable energy ecosystem. Furthermore, it enhances operational capabilities by providing system operators with greater visibility and control over grid management. David Chris, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Landis+Gyr, highlighted the unique features of the Revelo platform that enable advanced monitoring of power quality metrics and quick detection of grid issues at the measurement point itself.
With over six million Revelo sensing meters set for deployment throughout North America, the collaboration is positioned at the forefront of energy management technology. REC, established as one of Virginia's largest distribution cooperatives, is dedicated to innovating their infrastructure while maintaining a commitment to reliability and customer satisfaction.
By partnering with Landis+Gyr, REC stands to not only enhance its operational efficiency but also to better meet the evolving energy needs of its members. As more utilities seek to modernize their systems to adapt to the growing demand for energy flexibility and sustainability, this project represents a crucial step forward in the future of energy management.
