High School Students Launch Philanthropic Challenge for Blood Cancer Patients

In a remarkable initiative, Blood Cancer United® has commenced its annual competition, the Student Visionaries of the Year, aimed at empowering high school students across the country. This program encourages students to engage in fundraising activities that directly benefit patients and families affected by blood cancer. As part of a leadership development initiative lasting seven weeks, participants will acquire essential skills in areas such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and project management.

At the conclusion of this engaging program, the students who excel in fundraising will receive recognition within their local communities. Moreover, the candidate team that amasses the highest funds nationwide will earn the prestigious title of Student Visionary of the Year.

Since its establishment in 1949, Blood Cancer United has made significant strides in the fight against blood cancer, investing over $2 billion in groundbreaking research. The organization's commitment to improving treatment options has been pivotal in enhancing blood cancer survival rates, doing so through focused efforts in research, patient support, and advocacy.

Coker Powell, Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer at Blood Cancer United, expressed, "We are deeply appreciative of the dedication shown by each Student Visionary of the Year candidate. These remarkable individuals are not merely envisioning a better world for those affected by blood cancer; they are actively working to create it."

Last year’s Student Visionaries of the Year campaign was unprecedented, with more than 2,000 high schoolers nationwide coming together to shatter previous fundraising records. The national winners, a brother-sister team from Boston—Cedar and Posey Connell—raised an impressive $620,000. Their inspiring story epitomizes the potential impact young changemakers can have on the lives of those struggling with blood cancer.

Deirdre McGuinness, Vice President of Student Visionaries of the Year, noted, “The resolve displayed by these young visionaries serves as evidence that the upcoming generation is not merely waiting for change—they are propelling it forward."

Supporting this noble cause as the National Presenting Partner for the second consecutive year is Sunbelt Rentals, a leading firm in the equipment rental sector. Their partnership plays a vital role in enriching the candidates’ experiences and continues to nurture the leaders of tomorrow.
