Dialogue on the Future of Higher Education



On December 15, 2025, Vice President Atsufumi Yokoi of Okayama University engaged in a discussion with Dr. Fanta Aw, the CEO of NAFSA (National Association of Foreign Student Advisers), based in Washington D.C. This conversation explored the future of higher education and its potential contributions to humanity and the planet's well-being.

In a rapidly changing international landscape, the two leaders emphasized the need to redefine the purpose of higher education as a service to humanity and the Earth. They agreed on the importance of placing equity, empathy, and human dignity at the forefront of educational frameworks. Furthermore, they highlighted the necessity of addressing the social and cultural impacts of emerging technologies such as AI, ensuring these advancements contribute positively to human and societal happiness.

The dialogue transcended competitive notions traditionally associated with higher education and shifted towards a collaborative approach rooted in solidarity among universities. It was recognized that integrating ethical values into institutional frameworks and decision-making processes can foster a more sustainable and inclusive society through higher education.

To invigorate student exchanges between the USA and Japan, they positively discussed expanding learning opportunities and promoting mutual understanding. They specifically examined initiatives like the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program advocated by Okayama University, focusing on how to sustainably enhance effective student exchange programs from concrete perspectives.

As a national university corporation, Okayama University is committed to collaborating with international partners, including NAFSA, to actively participate in the co-creation of desirable futures for both local communities and the globe.
