The National Press Club Journalism Institute proudly announces that it is accepting applications for the prestigious
Pamela Tobey Award for Excellence in Visual Storytelling for 2026. This award acknowledges journalists who are reshaping how narratives resonate with digital audiences through innovative techniques beyond traditional text. The winner will receive a monetary prize of
$1,000 and national recognition, celebrating their outstanding contribution to visual storytelling.
What is the Pamela Tobey Award?
Established in 2025, the Pamela Tobey Award was created through the generosity of Rick Dunham, a former president of the National Press Club, and his wife Pamela Tobey, a former graphics editor at The Washington Post. The award is named in honor of Pamela’s significant contributions to visual journalism and aims to inspire creativity in narrative design.
Why Apply?
The award is unique in its criteria, encouraging journalists to push storytelling boundaries through various mediums. Applicants can include independent creators and newsrooms of all sizes, as long as they adhere to established journalistic standards. The award not only recognizes exceptional work but also serves as a platform for professional development in visual journalism.
Eligible projects must demonstrate several key elements:

A Compelling Story: Your entry should encapsulate a clear and powerful narrative framed by thoughtful editorial and design decisions.
2.
Innovative Storytelling: You must showcase a creative use of at least three non-textual storytelling elements. This can involve data visualization, interactivity, photography, videography, audio, illustration, or any emerging media tool that contributes to the storytelling process.
3.
Engagement: Focus on the engagement factor with digital audiences through a coherent and inventive presentation style.
Application Process
The submission window is open until
July 20, 2026, and entries must have been published between
January 1 and June 2026. There are no fees for entering, making it accessible for all eligible parties. Each organization can submit up to three entries, emphasizing the value placed on diverse voices within journalism.
Submission Guidelines
- - Each entry should include a working and accessible URL. For paywalled articles, access instructions must be provided.
- - Non-traditional entrants are encouraged to submit a brief statement that outlines their editorial independence, ensuring transparency in their journalistic practices.
- - In addition to the cash prize, the creators of the winning project agree to conduct a design-focused training session within three months of receiving the award, further contributing to the advancement of their peers in the industry.
Past Winners
Last year's award was bestowed upon a team from Reuters for their impactful project titled
“The unexploded bombs of Gaza.” This project effectively used a blend of powerful illustrations, photography, color coding, and data representation to articulate the narrative’s scale and impact—showcasing how innovative formats can better convey complex stories than traditional media.
