Andreas Kofler's Leadership Renewed for Alto Adige Wine Consortium
The Consorzio Alto Adige Wines, which plays a crucial role in promoting and safeguarding the Alto Adige DOC wines internationally, has re-elected Andreas Kofler for a third consecutive term. This decision underscores the organization's ongoing commitment to establishing Alto Adige as an exceptional premium wine destination characterized by its diverse alpine terroir, high-altitude vineyards, and a focus on quality production.
Founded in 2007, the Consorzio serves as the primary representative of the region's wine industry. It actively protects the Alto Adige DOC appellations, oversees the branding of Alto Adige Wines on a global scale, fosters international market opportunities, and provides various services to its members—covering cooperative wineries, estate wineries, and independent winegrowers.
Following his re-election, Kofler expressed his gratitude and sense of responsibility in leading the organization. He recognized this renewal as a testament to the successful direction the organization has pursued over the years. Emphasizing the Consorzio’s long-term goals, he stated that promoting a strong connection between wine and the land it comes from remains a top priority. Among the significant advancements achieved under his leadership is the acknowledgment of 86 Additional Geographical Units (UGAs) for the labeling of wines. This initiative marks a vital step toward authenticity, a commitment to local terroir, and open communication regarding the wines' origins.
A key project on the horizon is the construction of the "Casa del Vino" (House of Wine), which will be a central hub for wine culture and a new operational headquarters situated in a historic building near Mareccio Castle in Bolzano. After nearly two decades of meticulous planning and navigating bureaucratic hurdles, construction is now underway. Kofler anticipates that this facility will not only house the Consorzio's operational activities but will also set the stage for showcasing the unique identity and culture associated with Alto Adige wines.
Kofler is also keen on expanding wine tourism, which he believes holds immense potential yet remains underestimated in the region. The Consorzio envisions a more structured and professional approach to wine tourism that appeals to new audiences, particularly during less busy seasons. Kofler desires to elevate Alto Adige to a status comparable with prominent wine tourism locales like Burgundy, Piedmont, Tuscany, and Napa Valley.
As part of its marketing efforts, the Alto Adige Wine Summit will continue to be the Consorzio's flagship event, with the next iteration planned for 2027. This biennial summit gathers international wine media and industry professionals while expanding its programming and outreach efforts.
In concluding his commentary after re-election, Kofler expressed sincere gratitude to the Consorzio team, acknowledging their steadfast dedication and expertise which he values significantly for the exciting journey ahead in the next three years.
