Empowering Girls Through Sports: Women’s Sports Foundation Awards 2025 Grants

The Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) has revealed its grant recipients for the 2025 Sports 4 Life initiative, a collaborative effort with ESPN that strives to harness the transformative power of sports. This year marks a significant milestone, as the foundation surpasses $3 million in total funding aimed at bolstering girls' participation and leadership in various sports, particularly in underserved communities. Grants totaling $400,000 are awarded to 40 organizations across 19 states and Washington, D.C., reaching nearly 6,000 girls engaged in both traditional and non-traditional sports.

Since its inception over ten years ago, the Sports 4 Life program has allocated more than $3.2 million to support 281 organizations across the U.S. and its territories, impacting 95,000 girls participating in over 40 sports. The program is designed to foster essential skills—leadership, confidence, self-esteem, and perseverance—that contribute not only to physical health but also to academic and personal success.

Danette Leighton, the CEO of WSF, articulated the organization’s mission, stating, "Every girl deserves the chance to play, lead, and thrive because when they do, we all win." The long-standing partnership with ESPN has been instrumental in driving this initiative forward, with both organizations committed to promoting equality in sports and empowering the next generation of female leaders. According to WSF data, a staggering 71% of women who played sports as youth transitioned into formal leadership roles later in life, evidencing the long-term value of sports participation.

Launched in 2014, the Sports 4 Life initiative was established to address the disparity in access to sports among girls, especially those from varied backgrounds. Research indicates that African-American girls, in particular, are often less likely to engage in sports, highlighting the critical need for programs that offer inclusive opportunities. Moreover, the WSF's findings suggest that girls who participate in Sports 4 Life-funded programs report significant improvements in their physical, social, and mental well-being after just one season.

This year’s awardees include a diverse mix of activities ranging from archery to ice hockey, showcasing the expansive reach of the program. Notably, 27 of the 40 funded organizations are new, which reflects a growing commitment to inclusivity and outreach within the realm of girls' sports.

Kevin Martinez, Vice President of ESPN Corporate Citizenship, echoed the sentiment of empowerment through sports, highlighting the importance of fostering confidence and resilience in young girls. ESPN’s Take Back Sports initiative, powered by Disney, emphasizes the company’s dedication to keeping girls engaged in sports, reinforcing that investing in such opportunities extends far beyond mere participation.

The Women’s Sports Foundation is dedicated to creating a level playing field, advocating for gender equity in sports, and empowering every girl to reach her full potential in life. With a legacy that traces back to its founder, Billie Jean King, WSF has been at the forefront of advocating for women's participation in sports, contributing over $115 million toward this cause.
