Background of the Event

Shinjuku is home to over 40,000 foreign residents from approximately 130 countries and regions, making up around 13% of the area's population. Despite this rich diversity, challenges persist, including limited opportunities for interaction between Japanese and foreign residents, which hinders mutual understanding. According to a study on multicultural coexistence conducted in the area, many foreign residents express difficulties in daily life, particularly regarding language barriers and a lack of friendships. Over 50% of foreign respondents reported not having relationships with Japanese individuals, highlighting the necessity for environments where these interactions can flourish.

The event aims to address these issues by providing a space for cultural exchange, thereby breaking down barriers and misconceptions. Participants will have the chance to experience traditional Japanese arts and practices, contributing to a deeper understanding of each other’s cultures.

Furthermore, the event recognizes the growing issue of isolation among foreign seniors who have settled in Japan, particularly those who arrived in the post-war period. As they age, many face social isolation due to language difficulties and lack of community support. Therefore, bridging the gap between generations of residents is crucial to fostering a supportive, inclusive community.

The Importance of Cultural Understanding

The findings from Shinjuku's multicultural survey stress the need for initiatives that promote cultural awareness, suggesting that enhanced understanding can alleviate prejudice and discrimination. This event, supported by the Shinjuku District Collaborative Promotion Fund, strives not only to provide entertainment but also to cultivate a new form of interaction that welcomes cultural exchange.

Interested individuals from both local and foreign backgrounds are encouraged to attend, as the event aspires to foster relationships that transcend cultural boundaries. Whether you are a long-time resident or new to Shinjuku, this is a perfect opportunity to learn, share, and appreciate the rich tapestry of cultures that make up this vibrant city.
